St. Ambrose played an exhibition at DePaul on Nov. 1, and lost 89-73. But that was their VARSITY, and they also have a junior varsity like a lot of small schools do.
The St. Ambrose Junior Varsity played their first game last night at ICC.
The Cougars were trying to go 3-0.
I saw most of the game and it was similar to the first home game Tuesday against Carl Sandburg.
ICC totally overmatched SAU and beat them at nearly every aspect of the game.
ICC played all their players with the starters playing only average 1st half minutes and few 2nd half minutes.
Overall the game was sloppy, lots of turnovers for both teams, but St. Ambrose had 32 turnovers.
ICC won 107-66, but the final 10 minutes dragged on forever with whistles, turnovers, fouls.
A couple of the ICC players, including Shang Ping were seen dunking by the officials as they went through their pregame warmups, and ICC was assessed a technical with St. Ambrose shooting 2 technical FTs before the tip off.
Then St. Ambrose nailed a couple 3's and led 8-2 before ICC's smothering defense took its toll.
Williams had 18 points, and several of the ICC point guards had fine games (Jeff Wires, Wendell Mardis, Tad Sterling).
Ray Brown, Matt Salley, Daniel Ruffin, and Will Franklin were all there watching.
One thing I paid special attention to was trying to gauge the players' height.
DeAaron Williams is listed as 6'5", but I think he is closer to 6'4" judging when he stood next to several other players.
Shang Ping is listed as 6'10", but I believe that is not accurate.
He stood next to Matt Nicholson (from Washington) on several occasions, and is maybe 1/2 inch taller than Matt.
That would place Ping at about 6'8". Even when he stood next to DeAaron there was about a 3" difference, but it might be hard to tell, as Ping seems to have a bit of a natural slouch, and he might be able to stand taller when measured.
Ping ended with 8 points but could have had more if he had hit the layups. Ping is very athletic for his size but still needs to work on his shot.
