We've done more promotions like this in the past 2-4 years than ever before. What's our attendance level been doing during that time frame? How bout' crowd noise? I'm not saying don't do anything, that would be foolish. The styling of it is just personal preference, and it's not my preference but I'm one guy.
Unfortunately, the product on the floor is more or less irrelevant in these discussions, the marketing department cannot control that in any way shape or form. You're also attributing correlation to causation. We've done lots of promos, and attendance has been down, but we've also been in the middle of a terrible recession and our worst season in 10 years, I'd argue if the marketing dept. hadn't created a good atmosphere the attendance drop off would have been much worse. You're also looking at the attendance as the only indicator of successful marketing. How profitable does it make BU basketball? Does it make recruits want to come here? Can we get more money for advertisements? Does it make people talk about BU Basketball the next day at work? Finally, I would argue MSU, may not get more butts in seats because of the promotions, but it definitely brings in more revenue and creates a more exciting atmosphere for the fans and players, which is a fine accomplishment IMO.

with working closely with the marketing department over the last year with the Red Sea, the number one thing they always tell us is that our job is to fill the stadium regardless of how the team is playing. Thats something they cannot control. Time and time again students have said that one thing that encourages them to go to games is free stuff. Therefore you see the give aways and t-shirts as the marketing departments interpretation of those findings. I think our program runs its marketing strategies more like the big time mens basketball programs. Just this past year I went to a Marquette game with a friend and he came down to a Bradley game. He commented how impressed he was that we fill a large stadium similar to the Bradley Center (haha kind of ironic that bradley doesnt play there) and that our promotions and player introduction were of the same caliber even though we are not in a "power conference" and have less than half the number of students at Marquette.

And filling Carver like we do (in spite of a less than stellar W/L record lately) is something we all can be proud of and I'll admit, that our marketing helps make that happen. We really do have something unique here that I'm proud to show off to people when they come in from out of town. I just keep thinking, what will happen if we start winning big?!?!? Can't wait to find out.
