Marshall, Wichita State agree to extension through 2018

Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall has agreed to an extension that will keep him with the school through 2018. Marshall was thought to be a "strong" candidate for the Texas A&M head coaching position.

I'm glad to see the Valley keeping one of their own. I know if Marshall continues to have success, then he'll probably land a Power conference job soon, but Marshall should be with Wichita for at least a few more seasons.

I think the only disappointment is not making the NCAA tournament. They kind of choked last year when they had a great chance to be MVC champs, but I can't pin that on the coach. The previous season, UNI was just too much to overcome.
I would give him an A for the job he's done since taking over at Wichita. The guy led them to an NIT championship - that should count for something! Every year, the # of wins have increased. While I don't expect an easy road to get to the Big Dance next season with a lot of key players having graduated, I don't see why Wichita St. will not have continued success for a few years at least. I like his repoir with the student-athletes and fans from what I've seen and heard.

If I'm a WSU fan, I'm fine with Marshall's resume so far at WSU, but I'd be expecting NCAAs soon. Like, get in the tournament and win games in that tournament in the next 2 years. It's go time at WSU.

When you take into account Marshall's Winthrop record of NCAA appearances and an NIT Championship with WSU I'd say he's pretty deserving of the raise. To compare him to "other" coaches who have failed to make the NCAA Tourney is just a bad comparison, IMO.

This was Marshall's 4th season at Wichita State. In Jim's 4th year, as we know, he was in the Sweet 16. Plus, Jim also took over a 20-loss team, whereas Marshall took over a pretty good Wichita State team that had been to the Sweet 16 a year earlier, and had 4 winning seasons in a row and 85 wins over that time. So it may not be such a "bad" comparison.

For the record, Jim also got a raise and extension after his success in 2005-2006. Let's see where Marshall goes from here. So far, he's benefitted greatly from players he inherited from Mark Turgeon. Next year will be his first year with all his own players..

11-20 in his first year at WSU was because he had no team left from the Turgeon era. He scrambled to get JUCO players, and build the team up. You also have to look at the two style of play between Turgeon and Marshall. Marshall took a team that was built around Defense, and tried to mold them to his style of uptempo offense. The players Turgeon left, were absolutely not the style of player or caliber of player Marshall wanted. You also have to look at players who left the program when it changed, the main one was Ogirri, who was huge in our run to the Sweet 16.

Marshall has done an amazing job, and I think we can all agree on this next statement, being MVC fans, that if The Valley got more respect, we should have gotten at large bid this year to the tournament. Its really a shame that we don't get 3 bids as a conference. At a minimum we should have 2 teams in the tournament every year. 10 Big East teams is a joke when you have teams such as Mo St and WSU missing the dance. I'll be the first to say though that WSU really screwed ourselves at the end of the season, and also couldn't capitalize early in the season on missed chances against UCONN and SDST. I guess thats why college basketball is so fun to watch.
