  • ISU - Cincinnati

We have had several discussions about the return game Cincinnati owed to ISU, and it was delayed until 2007-2008 with Cincinnati paying a penalty to do so.

But now it appears from an article today in the Pantagraph that Cincinnati has bought out of the return game altogether, just as was predicted.

Here is the prior discussion and some links:

(see the next to last post in the thread)

There was a published report that Cincinnati had to pay ISU $25,000 just to delay the game until 2007-2008, but if they then change their minds and don't want to play it in 2007-2008, they will still owe the contracted full buyout that is rumored to be in the $80,000-$100,000 range.

But don't put it past Cincinnati to do just that.
They could buy out entirely of the ISU game and add an extra game against a BCS school and easily make that amount up and even double it.

Just recently Bill Self was quoted as saying if just one of their exhibition opponents backed out or if they went to a closed scrimmage instead it would cost them $400,000-$500,000,
that's how much money they make just on a home exhibition game. They probably make double on a big time game with TV coverage.

The report isn't entirely correct. They bought out of the game for this season only. They are coming to Normal in early December 2007.

No I don't have an article to link you to, but I spoke directly with the source and they will be in Normal or be forced contractually to pay a SEVERE amount of $$$$.

They will be here next season.

Thanks DC, I would still like to see Cincy return and play ISU, as it is great for the Redbirds and also great for the Valley.
But I still will not be the least bit shocked if I don't see the Bearcats on ISU's schedule next year.

I have to admit to being somewhat skeptical myself, but we were told it would happen for sure. I'm always skeptical of the BCS schools and their deep pockets being able to buy their way into or in this case out of just about any situation.

Im wondering can ISU simply refuse the buy out offer or is it written into the contract that Cinn can buy out with ISU not even having the option to refuse?
