  • Jerrance Howard wanted the Bradley head coaching job

???I wasn??™t contacted about head coaching jobs,??? the 30-year-old Howard said.
???I didn??™t apply for Loyola. I didn??™t try for Northern Illinois. I tried to put my name in there for the Bradley job,
and I didn??™t get a chance. I understand I??™m still young and I??™m only four years into this business,
but I was frustrated to not a get chance to interview at Bradley and present myself and share my blueprint for a program.???

I have heard this same thing before. Jerrance is a great guy and will be a head coach before too long. I think he would have made a pretty good choice for Bradley, but I believe one of the top priorities for our AD was a coach with head coaching experience.

When you set a hard requirement like that, you run the risk of glossing over fantastic candidates. But you also are able to focus on a certain type of replacement.

Maybe he wants our top assistant job. Just kidding, I realize he isn't coming here.

Thats a ****ed if you do, ****ed if you don't situation.

When I thought things were unraveling I wanted Jerrance too, but they obviously weren't.

This is sports. I like Jerrance personally and think he is going to be a good head coach, but he is young.

If we wanted a head coach, then interviewing non head coaches wasnt going to be in the cards.

I have a hard time in bringing in a guy that most of his responsibilities has been recruiting, things turned out good so far as we got a coach that has won championships and his style of play looks to be very appealing.

Howard would have been an interesting choice. You kind of run into the same situation that you had with JL. It would have been somewhat controversial with his inexperience. And because he grew up here if things don't go well then there could be problems........his staff would have been the main thing.Could he have brought an experienced staff on?

Bradley was not in a position to take a risk on this hire. The next coach was either going to win or he was going to finish off this program for good. If I were Cross I would have ruled out assistant coaches too.

I like Howard's attitude. He seems positive and knows what he wants to do.

He's also ambitious, which shows through when he expressed his disappointment in not getting a look for the BU spot.

At this point, he is the ultimate high risk, high reward kind of candidate. If he fails, then everyone can criticize the hire and say, "I told you so. He wasn't ready." If he's successful, the AD looks like a genius and Howard is the next hot name for a BCS job and your job becomes more appealing.

I'm comfortable with BU not interviewing Howard. IMO, as brocks said, BU was not in a position to take a risk like that.

Good luck to Howard moving forward...unless he ends up at Illinois State

Howard would have been an interesting hire... But I'm more happy with who we got and how things seem to be going. Best of luck to Jerrance.

I still wonder how much Jerrance wanted the Bradley job vs. How much he wanted to build his resume by being associated with top 100 type jobs. (Part of the recruiting game is being associated with higher profile schools)

If he wants to be a head coach he has to get out of the role he's currenly in. He has to gain some coaching credentials and recruiting alone doesn't do that. He should come to a program like Bradley's and work for an up and coming coach and gain the experience and credentials he needs.

Any hire is a huge risk. If there were 'safe bets' then every team would take that safe bet and be in the NCAA tournament.

FWIW (nothing) Howard was my first choice.

but don't you think if Jerrance tried to get his name in at Bradley that he at least deserved the courtesy of a call-back or an interview?
