  • Maryland's Gary Williams to announce retirement

Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams will announce he is retiring.

  • #2
Gary Williams to retire after 22 years as Maryland's coach-

This decision apparently came as a surprise to everyone at Maryland.

Initial speculation is that Maryland may go after Notre Dame's Mike Brey.

2 top recruits for Maryland's class of 2011 were reached by reporters and have stated they will reopen their recruitment-
    Sterling Gibbs and Nick Faust

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Never did like him anyway.

Wow this comes as a surprise -- given his public feud with the NC State AD -- but I guess when he saw his meal ticket Jordan Williams leaving for the NBA and the fairly weak recruiting class coming in -- time was right.
His inability to win much since 2002 was actually impressive -- they had won only 4 ACC Tourney games in the past 6 years -- and shown virtually nothing in the post-season

Aside from Jim Boeheim, who will lead the battle cry for more mediocre BCS schools to get NCAA bids now that Uncle Gar is retiring?

Wait, there's Dickie V, Bilas, Billy Packer, etc, etc, etc, etc...................

Maryland is my 2nd favorite team and I'm sad to see Gary retiring. He took a program from the Len Bias years to a national championship. He is fighter so I expect he retired for another reason then anything to do with his recruiting class.

Maryland officials are to meet with Arizona's Sean Miller today. Reportedly, the Maryland job is his if he wants it.

Why would Sean move from UofA to Maryland? They are behind UNC, Duke, Georgia Tech, maybe WFU, and VT also. Sean gets to recruit kids to Tucson (a far easier sell) and is second only to UCLA in basketball tradition, not an also-ran after Duke and UNC.

Have you ever seen the facilities at Maryland? Do you know anything about the fan base? Behind Duke and NC (which being an also ran to them is not an insult) yes but GT and VT, PLEASE? Do you know the potential there is in the Balto./DC metro area? GW just refused to play the AAU handler game but if Sean is prepared to do that watch out!

There is no comparison in the fan base between East coast/Mid-west college basketball vs west coast. Also Sean is an east coaster. I would not be surprised to see him move. Maryland is a basketball school first and has a very large passionate and loyal fan base.

Agree with everything you just said SFP. This is a no-brainer for Miller.

Maryland has better fans/attendance, more tradition, and in a better basketball "zone"

but like amc said....it would be easier to recruit the 4/5 stars in Arizona and the west....then any of the east cost 4/5 stars....

I am sure Maryland will pay more.

It will be hard to win the ACC though.

Sean Miller has turned down Maryland and signed a multi-million dollar extension with Arizona. Nicely played by Miller.

Maryland then called Butler's Brad Stevens, but Stevens turned them down without trying to play the situation to get another raise/extension-

I've been hoping that they bring in Turgeon. Shaka Smart may be just a bit of a reach. I like Brey but not a huge fan. The one thing Brey does bring to the table is his DC connections.

SFP, you're rose colored glasses for Maryland are DARK.

U of A has a campus that is second to none, twice as many final fours, has missed one NCAA tourney since 84, Maryland has missed 4 times in the last 7 seasons. Maryland is really on it's way down. They haven't been competing for top players for a decade. I can't blame Sean Miller at all. We'll see who Maryland gets, but I believe they'll sign someone who confirms that they aren't one of the top jobs in the country.
