On a slow day see if you can remember this event...
March 24, 2001....
watch this video....
It is major league pitcher, left hander Randy Johnson throwing a 100mph fastball and it strikes and kills a bird that was flying by...
Without looking it up...here's the question....
Since there was (and still is) NO specific rule in the rule book to cover this situation, where a pitch strikes a bird or any other animal before crossing the plate,
Then WHAT was the umpire's call on this pitch??
A) Strike
B) Ball
C) Balk
D) No pitch
E) Dead Ball
F) Interference
G) Foul ball (or Fowl ball)
Here's the answer...mouse over to read...
--The pitch was ruled "No pitch and a dead ball"...so both D and E are correct..
BUT note that if a batted or thrown ball when already in play strikes an animal, there is a rule to cover that and the ball remains in play..
