  • Better Banks JL Ad in Sunday's PJS

I wanted to recognize the Better Banks JL ad in yesterday's PJS. The advertisement was well done and very classy.

Note--just saw this in the coffee shop this morning and haven't seen this mentioned anywhere.
    Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

For those that didn't see it, here is the text:

"A Note of Thanks to Jim Les"

Better Banks would like to thank you for being a genuine advocate for our bank and for Central Illinois. Your time spent coaching demonstrated the same great energy you brought to Peoria as a player. We appreciate the integrity with which you represented our Bank, Bradley Basketball and our communities.

We wish you the best of luck wherever your next path may take you. Know that you always have a home here and at Better Banks.

        Sincerely,
Steve E. Backlund & Better Banks
        Chairman & CEO

Is there a story as to why they did this 6 weeks after the termination, and nearly 4 after the hiring of Geno? I like the sentiment, but the timing is very strange. At first I thought the PJS goofed and ran an old ad or something...

Yes, he is. I have had the opportunity to meet him, and he's a great guy. He is also a big supporter of Bradley athletics, and a big advertiser for Bradley. He worked closely with Jim Les on ads for the Bank, as well as on projects for Bradley.

Usually it takes time to do the layout, make the payment for the space, alot for the space to be in the paper, etc. And with the PJS downsizing, its not like they have some intern to just throw a layout in there. Plus, if it is done wrong, it could make the paper/better banks look really bad so they probably just wanted to cover their bases.

Here is the ad for those who haven't seen it. It this breaks any rules, feel free to delete.-
From PJ Star sports expert Kirk Wessler in his Jan. 10, 2012 column following 8th loss in a row at Drake-
"Yes, the Braves are better than they were when the season started two months ago. By a light year or two, they??™re better."

And from the PJ Star 4/26/12, Dave Reynolds-
"Fields and Grier both appear to be difference makers. If Bradley continues to add the right players around them, happy days may be ahead for the Braves after a long dry spell."

I am sure they had a good reason to delay but production of the ad would not be it. I run many newspaper ads with PJ Star and could start today concepting with a graphic arts and copy person, get first, second, and third drafts, and still have it in both the Saturday and Sunday paper.

Classy ad, and I agree that Mr Backlund is genuine (could be those Nebraska roots). I think the timing is about right really.

Good luck to coach Les and welcome Ford.
