Outstanding Bennie! Fantastic reference....How did you ever think of this?

      My turn!

Replaced beloved Head Coach Snort Grinstead who was fired amongst great controversy by Superintendant Willard Green cause he ordered new jerseys (black?) without authorization. Local basketball crazed population angered, bitter, and without hope with the beloved former coach's dismisal, and the new coach's radical new practice & game plan. New coach had never even gone to the league quarterfinals before in his short career.

In his second season, new coach led his school to the league title!

PS - all this is from the real Milan Ind 1950's BB history which the movie Hoosiers was based on. At least that was what Wikipedia reported!

I watched that movie about a month ago so it was fresh in the memory bank.

Louisville Courier-Journal writer Jody Demling's latest blog entry on Remy Abell-

??? The Remy Abell sweepstakes is going to get interesting. One answer to a lot of e-mail questions: Louisville has evaluated Abell - a lot last summer - but don??™t look for the Cardinals to be involved. And an answer to a lot of others - Indiana is in the thick of it and he would be a great fit there. A lot of other schools calling.

After reading all of Demling's blogs re RA, it really is interesting how RA came to do an about face with BU...

            -----------------------------------------------------------------------
"It felt like the perfect fit for me," Abell said. "I??™ll have a better opportunity to play there and I just felt so comfortable when I went there with the coaches and the players."

It was good pressure for me," Abell said of the process. "But now I can focus on my senior year. It??™s a great place for me. I feel like I could be a big fish in a small pond. I like that."

"It was real good," Abell said. "Right now, I told him I was going to talk to my family tonight and call him tomorrow morning. I just need to talk to my family to see what to do.

"but my family has helped me and we have stuck by it and been patient"

"I just want to find the school that is the best fit for me"

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------

I suspect "family" will have a lot of influence on where RA ends up.

I have not met GF but would be hard pressed to think that he would come accross any less than JL and has his own pedigree to sell. If anything GF has had more recent success. The school hasn't changed, all but one player he met is back, he still would have been a big fish in a small pond and gotten all the opportunity and all playing time he would be qualified for. Styles of play between JL and GF don't appear to be radically different....I suspect GF would hold up against other D-I coaches face to face with players and their families. So it comes down to opportunities, and RA has many many more opportunities now than he did last fall.

The "we have stuck by it and been patient" comment really hit me as a player/family who thought they were better than schools who initially recruited/offered them, and, that things worked out for them with the chance to go big(ger) time later on.

I have no problem with RA moving on. He was given the opportunity to move up to a BCC school and took it with the help of his family. Its his life. I hope he has much success in the future.

Better now, than the player, or his family, having second thoughts after going to BU, no matter who was coaching. BU has been down that road before.

I think it was more of a case that he liked Bradley and Coach Les, but as he continued to have an impressive senior season, he began hearing from many sources that he could do so much better than Bradley. But since he is a religious and ethical kid, he never thought of backing out of his commitment. But when the coaching change happened, and the suggestions from outside sources that he get his release and reopen his recruiting increased tremendously, the pressure and opportunity was too much to resist. It became a legitimate chance to get out of the commitment, and go elsewhere. Under normal circumstancee, he would not have asked for a release, but when Les was fired, and the AD and new coach promised to release him if he wanted, he finally took advantage of it.
Our coaches have been aware of questionable contacts that Remy has been getting for several months. Send me a PM if you want to know more.

What is with the people who have said, "It wasn't Les he was gone either way"

How would he just be gone. I think that he would definitely have come. But eh hopefully he becomes an AP all american so the announcers in the title game can talk about how he was going to Bradley, and give us some advertisement.

My only point was after the kid blew up, he had many opportunities to go elsewhere, and as DC said, was getting actively recruited (illegally) before meeting wiht FOrd and asking for his LOI to be dropped.

It sounded to me like his "family" was all for RA going to a bigger opportunity, as not much else changed at BU....JL is a great guy, and a real charmer, but there wasn't much drop off with GF as far as a person, coach, a teacher or in his style of play.

If RA, and/or, his "family", wanted to go to a bigger pond, after RA said he wanted to go someplace he could play right away and be a big fish/small pond, how would he have been content with BU and JL?

This had "GRANGER" written all over it. Has nothing to do with JL or RA not being a good kid. He had an opportunity to go National with ESPN/BCC and he took it when he had a convenient excuse....one that wouldn't ruffle any NCAA feathers (only BU fans)....

Remy to visit Indiana University today-
Louisville news and Southern Indiana news, Louisville sports and Kentucky sports, politics, entertainment and Kentucky Derby coverage from the Courier-Journal

The 6-foot-4 Abell said he has "basically" narrowed his list to five schools and will visit Indiana University tomorrow. Abell will consider IU, Xavier, Butler, Penn State and Western Kentucky.
While Abell said he doesn’t have any favorites at this point, Indiana is getting the first visit and is clearly a school that is near the top of that list.

As I have said for a while, I expect Remy to end up at IU. It always helps to have a big head start on recruiting him.

I couldn't disagree more. 95% of kids in Division I sports pick the schools because of the coach. I did it when I went to play football. My teammates who played with me at the D-I level did it. You don't want to play for someone you don't feel like know and I don't blame Remy one bit for transferring. I wish the kid the very best and think he handled the whole situation with complete class.

Also, from the perspective of Remy's mom, you want to feel good about leaving your kid with someone for four years. She obviously felt comfortable with Coach Les but - and this is nothing against Coach Ford - but they just don't know him.

So it sounds like IU was tampering with a player who had a signed NLI to BU? Also, in the unlikely even that he chooses Western Kentucky, I'd be sick knowing that we lost a prized recruit to them.

Tom Crean is actually reaching a desperation phase....he has to land a scorer....

This will be his 4th year there and each year he's had higher expectations but essentially no improvement over the previous year --
He's also had 4-Star and top 100 recruits and Nationally ranked recruiting classes...so a lot of people have serious concerns about why he hasn't won yet.

Plus there's some lack of optimism for next year as many of his experienced players seemed not to develop (Verdell Jones' numbers dropped, so did Tom Pritchard's, MR's, and Jeremiah Rivers') and his key returning scorer - got reinjured and his playing days may be over (Maurice Creek).

BUT -- even so -- Hulls was ineffective in scoring against bigger guards, and Watford who is his biggest post scoring threat spent way too much time shooting 3-pointers (37-97).

I suspect Crean will be willing to promise instant starting and playing time, etc.....IU has a lot more shooting guards recruited in their future classes --

Logic plays little part in recruiting or a kids decision making.
Indiana has facilities and fan support that is as good as anyone's, and their basketball history is hard to match. When a kid tours their beautiful campus, and takes in all they have to offer, it is a pretty impressive. They usually get whichever recruits they want.
