There have been articles that have interviewed many recruits and tried to formulate a list of reasons that kids use when making the call or verballing...
#1 seems to always be that kids do indeed try to grab the highest perceived offer -- the brightest limelight (even if the chance for playing time is not all that obvious), the most chance of being on national TV -- thus the BCS teams get a disproportionate number of the kids they want when battling mid-majors.
#2 is the opportunity for playing time - usually lots of it expected right away...
#3 thru 10 are various reasons like the school having the right playing style, they liked the other teammates there, it was their favorite school growing up, close relationship with the coaching staff, nice locale (unfortunately this one doesn't carry a lot of weight or else Hawaii would be a inundated), has the right academics (odd how this reason actually rates so low), or is described with the ever-present-yet-vague "it was the right fit".
(which may really mean it was the only danged offer he got).
