Lavin has Cancer

Steve Lavin was still absent (7th straight game missed) last night and has said he is not going to be involved in coaching at all until he completes his prostate cancer treatment..
In a little more St. John's news...they've been playing only 6 guys but got some help...
a kid named Amir Garrett who was at Bridgton (Maine) Academy (prep school) - just got his grades after finals Monday, and was deemed to have sufficient course credits to graduate so he immediately enrolled at St. John's Tuesday - and guess what...
...he played last night in St. John's win over Texas Pan American!
This might just be the first time ever a kid has played at the top level of D-I basketball having never even been in college nor practiced with his team until the day he played with them!
Garrett had never practiced even once - only arriving in time for the team's "shootaround" before the game.
And -- it required something that is virtually unheard of and that surely would have NEVER happened at Bradley - it required that the NCAA's Committee on Initial Eligibility had to convene on an immediate and emergency basis and issue a ruling of eligibility instantly Wednesday for Amir Garrett to play for St. John's Wednesday night.
St. John's still struggles mightily despite having some pretty highly rated players..and last night was yet another example --
they trailed UTPA the entire game - then finally pulled it out - taking their first lead of the game with under a minute to go and in the end with UTPA having to foul securing a 5-point win.
