  • ICC beating Carl Sandburg

ICC leads Carl Sandburg 46-26 with 8 minutes to play in the 1st half.

DeAaron Williams has 8 points so far as ICC is dominating both ends of the court. ICC looks very good and should easily score 100+ points.

I was at the ICC game and can give even more info if people are interested.
First--lots of people there. Everybody noticed the crowd was larger than has been seen at an ICC game in years, maybe 400-500. I will bet the official count is way less as in 300-350, as they stopped taking tickets well before halftime, but another 100+ people came in at halftime or later.

I saw several posters there and we talked, and saw Brandon Lee's family, and Shaun Livingston's dad.
Also said hi the Coach Westendorf who was there to watch a couple of his alums. Zach McAllister was there.

Also saw Ray Brown and Zach Andrews there, came in about halftime and watched.

I agree Carl Sandburg is probably going to be bad this year, but ICC played very, very well.
They are really quick, energetic, and don't generally pass the ball more than once or rarely twice before someone is shooting.
Shooting PCT wasn't particularly high but they got a lot of loose balls and rebounds and shot some more.
Some of the shots were.....well....undisciplined, and maybe with the talent they have they will need at time to look for better ones.

Final score 118-49, but at least the last 10-15 minutes were total garbage time with deep subs playing.

ICC has 20 players on their roster and 15 of them dressed.
I talked with one of the teachers who was there and she said there is a real chronic problem keeping everyone eligible, but DeAaron is reportedly doing FINE.

Every one of the 15 played in the first 12 minutes, and the starters' scoring was affected by so many minutes being played by subs, but even the subs looked good.

Here is the scoring as I got it, but I am likely off a few points, as the game was lightning fast, I wasn't fully familiar with all the players, and the ICC yellow numbers on white jerseys don't make it easy to catch who scored.

Jeff Wires...fine PG from Central, looked great, started, made a lot of nice passes/ball handling nailed 3 3-pointers in about a 2 minute span in the 1st half, played sparingly in the 2nd half. Scored 11 pts.

Brandon Lee 4 pts in each half...total 8 pt. Not flashy, just solid. If he were 6'4" he'd get a lot of DI attention, but right now he is backup PG to Wires.

LaMarcus Anderson (from Woodruff) now goes by Marcus Anderson, but he is a fine player, now in the SG slot.
Nailed a bunch of shots and was literally En Fuego in the 2nd half for 18 pts total.

Justin Cornelius solid starter, 7 pts.

DeAaron Williams was all over the place. One stupendous alley oop dunk "brought the house down" and a couple other steal/breakaway/dunks got a roar. But was solid in some ball handling, movement, and defense. 13 pts in the 1st half, 2 more in the 2nd half in limited PT. Was a starter.

Shang Ping, did well. Started, 14 pts total, playing mostly in the 1st half, still not a good shoter, missed a lot of FT and easy shots but at this level will still clean up inside, although in the Big XII had better develop a consistent shot from 12-15.

Travis Jones F from Terre Haute 7 pt.

Kyle Weyeneth from Metamora 3 pt

Tad Sterling 3rd string PG from Bloomington Central Catholic, although I don't recall him from HS. Did a very good job considering he had Wires & Lee playing ahead of him, and scored 8 pts all in the 2nd half.

Wendell Mardis 4 pt, played some PG some SG

Billy Baptist, strong 6'4" kid can score inside, 5 pts.

Alex Sides from Eureka, did OK 2 pt.

DeMarcus Wells the program said he was from Manual, but he was unfamiliar to most there. 4 pt.

          Robert Davis 8 pt

Matt Nicholson played backup C, 4 pts, doesn't get off the floor much. Bad FT-er, had 2 shots, missed both, then got one extra for a lane violation and missed that, too.

Everyone missed a lot of FT, but didn't matter in this blowout.

ICC led 33-12 in the first 8 min
          They led 64-31 at half
they had 101 pt at 7 minutes remaining

In all they were fun to watch, but I will reserve final assessment for when they play Kirkwood or Coffeyville.
They didn't see much defense tonight.

By all rights they should have their best team ever.
Almost everyone is a sophomore, and they have a minimum of 3 DI kids with BLee, DW, and Ping, but I can see maybe one or two more possibly getting some looks.

ALSO--- if you have bothered to read this far, you get a BONUS.
I heard some outstanding news in regard to Bradley's recruiting, and from an outstanding source.
BUT-- I won't post it, you'll have to PM me and get it as "premium info".

A couple more observations that were made by those sitting near me...

ICC was still utilizing a full court press even after they were 40 points up. By then Sandburg had gone to deep subs.

Many of the 3-pointers shot and made by ICC were after the game was 50+ points and nobody was playing defense, so these shots aren't the kind you'll get in a real game.

A lot of the rebounds guys got were off multiple misses of close in shots later in the game during sloppy play, even a lot of rebs of guys' own missed shots.

One thing the Carl Sandburg coach argued was near the 5 min mark late in the game one of the refs called an official's time out just to let a whole new wave of ICC players on the court and into the game who had been sitting at the scorer's table for quite some while and were lapping onto the court creating a bit of an obstruction.
I have seen this done in youth games to let those guys in, but never in a college game. I suspect the ref just wanted to get them out of the way as he ran up and down the sidelines, but the Carl Sandburg coach was really a bit puzzled about it.

It's early, but after just two games, DeAaron Williams is in the Top 20 nationally in scoring among DII juco players.

ICC's Wendell Mardis, not even the starting point guard, is in the Top 10 in assists.

DeAaron has 21ppg, 2rpg, 2.5 steals per game
                Shang Ping has 11ppg, 4rpg
