  • The total cost of Coach Ford's contract $3.5 million

Crain's Ohio Business put the numbers together.

Looking at the terms of the deal, it becomes even clearer: Ford had $300,000 left on his Kent deal, and four years; Kent sports information director Alan Ashby told me Monday afternoon that his buyout is dollar-for-dollar, or $1.2 million.

Then comes a report that Oral Roberts coach Scott Sutton, who is in the mix for other jobs, turned down Bradley's offer of $600,000 a year. Whoa. So add the buyout onto a four-year deal at $600,000 per ??” former coach Jim Les earned $420,000 per year (thanks to reader Matt Halko for the tip on that figure) ??” and you're looking at Bradley paying around $3.5 million for Ford, who won two regular-season MAC championships and went 68-37 ??” but still hasn't coached in the NCAA tournament.

Good. I'm glad to see that BU has FINALLY decided to join the upper tier of the Valley.

So it's 875,000 per year for the first 4 years...you could look at it that way. Still not as much as some schools our size pay for their coaches. If he wins some MVC titles and tournaments no one will bat an eye. I think that's the standard of how much you should pay someone. If they do their job, will anyone care how much they are getting paid? In this case I think the answer is no.

        We had to do it.

You need to spend money to make money. I have zero problems with the financial end of this deal. Now I hope we are not cheap from here on out in order to get some real good assistants!

While I am very much for allocating more resources to commit to a winning basketball program, I believe that we considerably overpaid to get Ford here. Unbelievable!

I'm fine with any dollar amount because BU is a private institution and can do whatever it wants. They don't rely on my tax dollars to pay Ford, or renovate buildings, or hire faculty. They do it solely on revenue THEY generate and the generosity of alums and boosters. If BU overpays, they have to live with the consequences, just like a small business or private consumer overpaying for a car or house.

Yet another reason to root for BU instead of some money sucking state institution!

I do too. I am very hopeful that there are great things ahead.

One of the reasons that I am underwhelmed with this hire, is that basically, we threw semi-Ferrari money at a coach, and ended up with a Ford! From a salary standpoint to date, we are upside down! What we got in return are "ifs", "hopes", "unknowns" and a guy who hasn't even got a team into the NCAA tournament! Don't get me wrong, I like Geno and I really hope he takes us to a Final Four! But, GF is making good money especially when compared to other MVC coaches, and decent money when compared to other NCAA coaches. If I were Ben Jacobson with my $450k/year salary, I would be renegotiating my contract ASAP! With this type of money, we could have, and should have hired a more established coach!

                        Jacobson's deal for $450k/year
Northern Iowa and coach Ben Jacobson have agreed to a new 10-year deal that includes a substantial pay raise.

Link to USA today article of 2009 coaches salaries who made the NCAA tournament!

All BU did with this move was move into the modern day of basketball. You weren't getting any coach for less than 5-600k.

The money is nothing. All that matters is whether the coach wins. We won't know that for a while.
