  • When I googled to see what I could find out about Coach Ford, the dissapointment from the Kent fan base about his leaving without speaking to administration about a counter or to his players was all I could find. As excited as I am about this hire, and hopeful for the BU hoops future, there are two things that nag at me:

    1) Is there more to this, and is this a reflection of his character? Not casting stones, just wondering. One thing that seems universal is BU nation's respect for the character of both Coach Mo and Coach Les.

    2) How little there was in the national media about this hire. Didn't Butler and VCU raise the spotlight on dare I say it "mid-majors"? I guess when we start winning, we'll get the attention.

    • I think not going back to them is a class move...he knew where he wanted to go and made the move...why go back and see what they offer, if you want to make the move...

      • He apparently didn't go back because he wasn't simply looking for more money.

        • I understand being upset about not talking to his players first, but after accepting the offer they are no long his players BU's roster is his players. JG promised his players they would be the first to know about the new coach, and talking first to his former players would jepardize that promise.

          • Fair enough, but I'm not really talking about negotiating, how about "hey, thanks guys for the opportunity, I'm moving on." Just simple courtesy. I think we'd feel different, if the shoe was on the other foot. Say, Coach Les had followed up the Sweet 16 year with another trip to the Big Dance, and then left for a Big Ten school and we heard about it at that school's announcement.

            • It's really a no win situation. if you talk to people at Kent then it leaks out. Bradley players who were promised they would be the first to know would instead hear the news from Twitter, Facebook, etc. The more I hear about him the more I like him.

I see how it seems a bit awkward. But it seems JG wanted the players to know first, so that may of been a condition of the offer.
I think in your scenario, JL becomes a more national name and the B10 school isn't as involved with its players.

                • Bradley appears to be unwilling to meet the demands of the buyout in Ford??™s contract, and that could force KSU to take legal action.

The university could expect Ford to come up with the entire $1.2 million the university believes it is owed. The contract called for a dollar-for-dollar buyout, and Ford had three years remaining on a deal worth $300,000 annually.

                  • I like him too, I just wonder if there is a proper etiquette and whether he followed it. Not trying to imply he's the guy who runs the Fiesta Bowl or anything

If this is true, I have absolutely had enough of this administration. This once again makes us look Busch-league. This is standard operating procedure when coaches move up. How could this not have been taken care of ahead of time???? Ugh, I sometimes think I should just take the 'stick my head in the sand' approach of some.

                        • I have heard that one possibility is that the salary offer to the new coach includes extra to compensate him for the payout that he is responsible for.

                          • That's strange. I didn't think the contract was binding both ways. That is, if the employee chose to move on to a new job, then the employee just doesn't get the money anymore. Why make the employee pay the employer if he's not working there anymore? The employer can then just use the funds it saved with the dissolved contract by hiring a new guy.

Yeah I never quite understood that either. Could someone explain why if the coach wants to leave the contract isn't just voided?

                              • There are a number of coaches that have buyouts on their side of the contract. Some coaches will trade that for a longer contract term (security) or for a higher salary.
