The best pure hitter to have ever played the game has to be Ted Williams and a patriot who served in two wars. I'm not even close to being a Red Sox fan either but they guys record speaks for itself.

"Williams was the last player in Major League Baseball to bat over .400 in a single season (.406 in 1941). Williams holds the highest career batting average of anyone with 500 or more home runs. His career year was 1941, when he hit .406 with 37 HR, 120 RBI, and 135 runs scored. His .551 on base percentage set a record that stood for 61 years." Wikipedia

Back in the day when autographs at baseball card shows were cheap, I had a September 1941 issue of Life magazine signed by Ted Williams who was on the cover. I looked at Ted as he was signing my magazine and said that the guy on the cover looks as if he could hit .400. Ted responded: "that SOB sure as hell can!" lmao One of my top two signing experiences!!!
      Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™
