That tells me they are really hurting, much of it through their own missteps. But I think they will be hurting even more once they begin charging money for online readership!

Something tells me this won't last as long as some people think it might.

The State Journal-Register has been doing this for a while already and is a part of the same company so have a feeling it will stick around. Another way to bring in some needed revenue I suppose to go along with cost cutting measures like printing the Spfld paper in Peoria now. So far I have still been able to read the occasional article for free so I would expect the PJS to also allow some limited free access still.

Users will receive 15 free views of "premium content" each month. Once they reach that threshold, they will be asked to pay for access.

Those who opt not to pay, can still access certain pieces of content, beyond the 15-view limit. That content will include "public service news," such as boil orders, weather alerts and updates, school cancellations, Associated Press wire stories, or developing news such as a hostage standoff or a major traffic situation. Viewing that type of news will not register on your monthly meter. Other free content includes obituaries, photo galleries and video clips.

Pretty much everything else will be metered. This includes most staff-generated news, sports and features stories. Plus, our assorted blogs will be counted.

I'm guessing everyone will have to sign up for an "account" and sign in to view anything at all.

I know of no law that would prevent me from giving you my password for subscription online recruiting sites....
once I have subscribed the only thing prohibited is taking their premium content and posting it elsewhere

I would assume (but who knows...) that your account would be deactivated pretty quickly if they found it posted.

Now if one person buys it and just emails or PMs their password around... Can't imagine there's much to do!

Some lawyer on here will need to dig through the ToS Agreement

Lawyers out there, what are the rules about individuals with access to PJS content (newspaper or on line) from redistributing it (scan hard copy or copy and paste electronic format) for free via the Internet on this Forum? No one is charging and making a profit on the redistribution...

www.sj-r.com will allow you to view 20 "premium articles" a month with no charge. After you have reached your 20th, it blocks all contact, unless you sign up and pay, for the rest of the month. "Premium contect" is everything other than breaking news, entertainment, the 2 most recent sports stories, and obits... just an FYI on what to possibly expect

Dozens of ways, like limiting only one login at a time. Or tracking usage and banning the account per abuse, etc. Lots of online video games do this. If they notice someone usually logs in at a location in NYC, and then suddenly someone in China logs in they shut down the account.

You can very easily detect these abuse patterns.


Now, what's to stop someone from copying/pasting the article here? Technically nothing, legally it would be the site owner's butt in court.
