"Bielfeldt made the decision during a press conference at his high school.
With hats from the two schools in front of him, Bielfeldt reached for the Maize and Blue hat.

“It was a tough decision,” said Bielfeldt. “In the end I decided that I want to attend the University of Michigan.”"

Congrats to Max & I hope he has a tremendous career

It was a tough decision.......

I think that decision was made pretty easy after Sammy accepted the Illini's last scholarship.

I am no illini fan, but I gotta say, I am not a big fan of kids putting multiple team hats in front of them when they sign their LOI's and pick one as if it were some last second decision.

but it is hard to get the press interested and show up at your press conference unless you put on a show and throw in some drama

I'm not a big fan of HS kids holding press conferences to announce that they're playing basketball/football/whatever at school X.

I don't like it for stars and I definitely don't like it for role players.

but the kids probably feel it is one of the most exciting and important days of their lives...so I'd give 'em a pass even if they do something silly

If I got offered a scholarship to play FB or BB at a Major School, I know I'd throw a press conference to announce my choice....as long as all schools offering knew my decision prior to announcing. It is a big deal for the student athlete and his family. With all the external pressures on the kids and their families to make a decision, celebrate and have some fun with it. Once they arrive at college, the business of college basketball begins as does trying to remain a full time student.

+1 Always nice to celebrate big occasions in one's life!:)

Not sure if this makes any difference in your opinion, but Max didn't sign a LOI today. Spring signing period doesn't start until April.

Here is an interesting slant on the Max Bielfeldt story-

When the Chicago Tribune first reported that Max had committed to Michigan over Illinois, their headline read-
Illini benefactors' son chooses Michigan instead of Illinois
http://www.topix.com/ncaa/illinois/...lini-benefactors-son-chooses-michigan-instead

But they must have gotten some complaint, because shortly after posting the story, they changed the title, and it now appears as-
Peoria's Bielfeldt chooses Michigan over Illinois
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sport...ichigan-over-illinois-20110325,0,900951.story

Personally, I think the original title is really poorly thought out, and rather insulting. It somehow suggests the kid should have considered his grandparent's donations to Illinois in making his decision which college to attend. For the record, every report has said that Illinois did not have any more scholarships to offer Bieldfeldt after Sam Maniscalco transferred.

Not sure if we would have had a chance at him had we gotten a new coach by now but the thing I do know is we will be losing out on a lot of other opportunities if we don"t get someone soon as we need to be out recruiting players before the rest of the good ones that are left get taken.

Max is the grandson , not son, of the big Illinois benefactors Gary & Carlotta Bielfeldt.. they should do their homework

Some breaking news this week that will affect Max Bielfeldt...

The TOP RANKED unsigned player in the nation is Mitch McGary - a 5-STAR,
Top 5 ranked player in every rankings - and he's a similar low post player as
Max is....but ranked much higher....

McGary is now down to Michigan and Duke and will announce probably this week...

This is big news for UM fans. If Beilein can pull in a top 5 recruit it will only open the door for more to come to Meeeeeeechigan. It might not affect Max as much as it appears, because it's common knowledge that McGary is going to be a one and one player (even if the NBA changes their rules to 2 years out of high school- as he is 19 right now at a prep school). While these things are never certain, if it he is a true one and done, it will only affect Max for one year. In that year, he may be able to get bigger and better for his last 2 (or 3 if he redshirts) seasons.

Mr. McGary has went BLUE!!!!!!!!!

Max might be affected but I imagine he is happy for Mitch and Michigan. I read somewhere (can't find it now) that they played on the same AAU team at one point, along with fellow Michigan commit Glen Robinson III.

This does effect Max in that if they can recruit this type of player for one eason then they will have a chance to do it again once he leaves.
