SIU-E Considers Going D-I

According to NCAA rules, only one or two sports are allowed to be moved to Division I if a school doesn't upgrade its entire program. Basketball, an arguably large draw at SIUE, and football, which is nonexistent at SIUE, are prohibited from being reclassified to Division I unless a school changes all of its sports teams to Division I.

You see that a lot in Division 1 hockey. A lot of northern colleges not in D1 for everything play D1 hockey.
So the point is SIU-E would have to upgrade their entire athletic program to D1 for them to play D1 basketball. However if they wanted to have only a D1 golf team for example they could do so.
I don't think that made a lot of sense but what I was trying to say is correct anyways.

SIU-E is very serious about making the switch. My brother was on the baseball team and the coach said they wanted to do it soon and felt the baseball and basketball teams could compete well in the OVC. As for Lewis, they won the championship, but as was stated they used a couple ineligible players and had to forfeit there win.

I went to SIUE and played baseball for Bo Collins and am certain the baseball program and the soccer programs could compete at the D1 level in the OVC. Basketball could also but I dont think at the level they have achieved recently at the D2 level. Same can be said for the womans programs in the above mentioned sports, especially softball.
I personally do not think they will move the athletic department to the D1 level, but it would give the school great overall exposure.
btw, In the 70's the soccer program actually played at the D1 level.
