UConn (34-1) will almost certainly win another D1 women's NCAA championship again this season. They bid on and were awarded the 1st and 2nd round games this year. UConn breezed through those 1st and 2nd round games with a 36 point win over #16 seed Hartford, and a 24 point win over #9 seed Purdue. The 5,729 fans that officially showed for the 2nd round game at UConn's Gampel Pavilion, was not a bad crowd for women's NCAA games, but it was far less that what UConn draws at home regularly (they average 9,075 per game). UConn's home attendance has consistently been between 9,000-10,000 for many years which annually ranks 2nd in the country behind Tennessee.
But it upset UConn coach Geno Auriemma, who launched into a tirade against the UConn fans for not supporting the team better. He promised to ask the AD not to seek the NCAA tournament games again for at least 5 years as some sort of punishment for the fans. UConn has hosted at least one segment of NCAA tournament games for 22 of the last 23 seasons.
