  • Who is the Most Overrated Coach in College Basketball?

On air this morning, ESPN analyst Doug Gottlieb claimed
..John Calipari is the most overrated coach...(speaking of those currently in Sweet Sixteen)
..discussion that followed noted he makes a lot of bad coaching mistakes, leaves horrible foul shooters on the floor in tight games, can't figure out or coach against zone, and lands the best talent every year then fails to win championships.
No argument he is a great recruiter, but as a coach he is getting panned......

It's hard to argue with his winning % though.

I don't think he is in discussion for being the best coach, but I would take those numbers anyday.

Get the talent is one thing, coaching the talent is something different. I can see Cal being labeled as overrated.
Some see a hopeless end, while others see an endless hope.

Overrated I'd go with Pitino (Louis.), followed by Gary Williams (MD). Maybe it's because I just can't stand those guys.

Underrated I'd have to go with Bo Ryan (WI), followed by Stew Morrill (Utah St.) I don't think Brad Stevens has gotten enough recognition for the job he's done at Butler the past few seasons.
I don't hear a lot about Josh Pastner of Memphis, but he's done a great job since Calipari left.

Agreed, however I think that Pitino has paid his dues...

                Funny stuff AZ...

I'd have to go with Rick Barnes...

The guy is always talked about in the recruits he gets, yet he always falls short of what the network thinks they will do and the teams he coaches always seem to fall apart right at critical moments.

Recall, the year he had Kevin Durant, they got beat in the 2nd round!

One postseason tournament championship and just 19-18 in the NCAAT.

                  Underrated- John Bielein- Michigan
???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

Pitino won a national championship and Tubby Smith and Billy Donovan also won 1 , they were Pitinos asst. coaches at one time.

Since Pearl and Sampson are no longer employed, I would also have to go with Calipari.

For underrated... I'm tempted to say Jamie Dixon even though he hasn't had success in the NCAA tournament (one elite 8 team). 4 NBA draft picks while at Pitt. He made the NCAA tourney every year with only one 10 loss season.

Jamie's a good one, but I refrained from his name for the same reason you mentioned. I was impressed with what he's done in the reg. season the past 2 years.

Gottlieb is all wet. All Calipari does is win every single year - and win big - even when he has to reload because his kids go to the NBA. He is a TREMENDOUS basketball coach. It's not all about X's and O's, folks. A big part of being a great coach is getting talented kids with big egos to swallow their pride and play as a team. Year in and year out, Coach Cal has done that.

In his last 16 college seasons, Cal has finished first 13 times! 13! That's more MVC titles than Bradley has in its entire 100-year history. For goodness sakes, the guy didn't lose a single conference game his last three years at Memphis (48-0) and was just one loss in 2005-06 from being 64 for 64 over his last four seasons in the league. A great coach.

I'll tell you who was overrated - Gottlieb as a player. And I won't even get into the fact that he was expelled from Notre Dame for cheating.

you can't coach the top 5 kids in the country who are only thinking about the NBA.

Most will probably forget they even went to Kentucky...........

Same answer for me. Year in and year out Barnes brings in top recruting classes, and while they always seem to have a mid-season run in them, his teams flame out near the end of the year then crap out in the NCAA Tourney.
