  • Sweet Sixteen

And now...on to a real basketball topic........

Here are the teams left in the Sweet Sixteen

East --- Ohio State, Kentucky, Marquette, North Carolina
Southeast -- Butler, Wisconsin, BYU, Florida
Southwest -- Kansas, Richmond, VCU, Florida State
West --- Duke, Arizona, UConn, San Diego State

There are SIX mid-majors -- four of whom had to beat considerably higher seeds to get here.

Five are 8-seeds or worse...and because of the matchup of VCU(11 seed)/Florida State(10 seed), it's guaranteed that at least ONE 10 or worse seed will make the Elite Eight!
Only twice has a seed this low (1986, LSU 11 seed & 2006, George Mason 11 seed) made it to the Final Four.

BUT -- what do you want to bet we'll hear more about Kyrie Irving's bummed toe than we will hear about VCU or Richmond??

By the way a BIG congrats to Buzz Williams, Shaka Smart, Dave Rose and Chris Mooney for tying JIM LES for career Sweet 16 appearances

Dang, I wish Illinois would have beat Kansas. Such an opportunity.

...And also a BIG congrats to every coach in this year's Sweet Sixteen for having a better coaching record than Jim Les.
This is just the tip of the iceberg...

Kudos to the Mountain West. They finally get there this year, and they really needed to, because they were massively underachieving in the tournament going into this year.

Also, if the committee gives the CAA at-large bids in the future, everyone should just shut up about it. GMU, GMU, VCU now makes CAA at-larges 11-2 all-time.

I was impressed with the CAA this season - not quite like the Valley run in 2005-'06 since G. Mason kinda' dissapointed people vs. OSU in the last round. I was thinking it would be a 5 point game actually.
I wouldn't count out VCU as a Final 4 team. They are for real. But it won't be easy vs. FSU in the next round.

I'm fired up for Butler/Wisconsin tonight. I'm a sucker for solid defensive teams with efficient, deliberate offenses. Plus, I love Brusewitz. Can't wait for this game.
