  • Dan Monson

Let's start a new and independent thread on Dan Monson -- who the blogger from the Chicago Trib says is one of the favorites at Bradley...

Monson as many know was successful at Gonzaga then moderately successful at Minnesota (having been handed the complete mess after they were hit hard by NCAA sanctions), but not successful enough for the Gopher folks....then was run out there so Minny could go after Tubby
and since 2007, Monson has been rebuilding a Long Beach State program that was handed to him after NCAA sanctions left them on probation.
Each year there at LBSU he has done better...
6-25, followed by 15-15, followed by 17-16, then this year...

He finished 14-2 in the Big West (22-12 overall), had the #1 seed in their tourney - but lost in the Tourney finals and and was named the Big West Conference Coach of the Year...also -- a top 100 RPI
He was named the NABC Dist. 9 Coach of the Year

They got an NIT bid and lost 85-74 to Washington State who are still alive in the NIT

OK -- let the discussion begin....
I could be happy with Dan Monson but a few items bear on whether he might be interested...

-he has no strong ties to the midwest - only the few years in Minnesota....he's a lifelong west coast guy
-he just signed a contract extension through 2016 at Long Beach
-in California, the contracts at state schools can be known and it is said he is likely making in the range of $300K
-in addition to having a fine year -- his four best players are all juniors and coming back next year so the future at LBSU is bright...

-Here is his comment after signing the extension..
"The recently-signed extension ... will keep Monson in Long Beach for at least the next five seasons.

“What you find out in this business is that it comes down to relationships,” Monson said in a press release. “Relationships are no good if the people you work for don’t feel the same way you do.
My family and myself are extremely comfortable here, feel very fortunate to work here and just love being a part of Long Beach State and the community.
For an administration to feel the same as far as giving you an extension to stay here, that they believe in you gives you great confidence to do the job.
My family and I are extremely excited and we can hopefully settle in and concentrate on getting this program where the whole university and community are extremely proud and hopefully bring some championships.”

He is a close friend of Jim Molinari who was selected by Dan as assistant at Minnesota and he's a decent defensive coach.
He did it once and hired Mo (at Minnesota) to help coach defense...if he's at BU would he bring back Mo?

Mo-Mo Has Bradley On the Go-Go
???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

        Didn't Monson already say no?

Monson is a guy I think would definitely be one of the better hires BU could make. He had a lot to do with turning Gonazaga into what they are now, first as the top assistant and then as the head coach.

The only question is, as you pointed out T, how would he fair in the midwest?

I thought Monson had already said no? He appears to be building something pretty good at Long Beach St, and I would personally have a hard time seeing a guy leave that place with that history and that weather for BU.

As Tornado and others have said, I too wonder about his lack of connections in the midwest.

I like the sound of him the most of anyone mentioned, but it sounds like the ship has sailed. I don't think there is any way Mo would come, he has a head coaching job now. I just don't think that would happen.

I like monsoon's background... If he'd come, I'd be excited about him as a hiring. Can't imagine molinari leaving a head coaching gig for an assistants job at a place he was fired.

Are we talking about Kaplan here? If so let's clarify what Kaplan said before anybody gets excited about this thread.

"Bradley has also been in contact with IPFW coach Dane Fife and made a run at Long Beach State coach Dan Monson but he reportedly informed the school that he had no interest in the job."

                  Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

I think Dan Monson would be a good hire but as Beninator says I don't think he is a candidate.

This is the type of hire that I would enjoy. I don't know much on Monson, but he's shown the ability to do good things as a head coach at the midmajor level, but held his own with a very tough situation in the Big 10. Doubt he comes though, based on his current situation. And that he said no.
