Looking past the lack of head coaching experience, the thing that concerns me most about JH is that this job would simply be a stepping stone for him. If he has any success here, he will bolt for the first High Major that offers him the Head Coaching job.

I would much rather see Bradley go after candidates who not only want to rebuild the program, but also want to remain at the helm for an extensive (and successful) period of time. This is tough to guage when looking at potential candidates. However, you can at least look at the candidate's age and history to help speculate on what this individual's personal longterm goals are.

I want the exact opposite. Im tired of firing coaches. Lets have one succeed and leave. This job would likely then be even more appealing.

        Newbies ?

[Not sure I like newbies coming on the board and acting as if people are stupid for being a little scared of the hire.

please, i don't think anyone that takes the time to read the posts on this board should be referred to as newbies. Some of us do and have been quiet members of this board for many years. We just choose to read, not post. I read the rules and no where did i see anything about minimum post requirement. I read and appreciate all of the posts, even the ones i dont agree with.

JH will be a great hire, maybe not at BU, but somewhere
I will support whoever they Hire because I am a Bradley Basketball Fan. I supported JL because he was a great player and the coach of our team. I wish they would have given him one more year, but they didnt, so lets move on. I attend all the home games and will continue even when we lose. I will be ther if JG coaches the team herself. and by the way, good post pete

            I agree...

Hire Coach A let him achieve some success and leave

Hire Coach B who is even better and achieve more success and let him leave

Hire Coach C and be set up to continue an outstanding run of success

Think Butler, Xavier, Gonzaga, VCU, and even UTEP has had a pretty solid run since Gillespie in 02.

That is exactly how I feel. Now maybe if we have two succeed and move on to bigger jobs I would change my mind and say we need someone for the long term. However I think this job being a stepping stone can work well.

Long term, short term, who cares? I want a winner. Larry Brown would be my first pick out of anyone and he would be a short timer because that is what he does.

Don Sutton spent a bit of time with USF and since then the schools program is looking up.

I hate to say it, because I'd love to build the program with a 5 year-plus coach, but I agree with this train of thought. The Valley has become a launching pad conference and Les and Altman were exceptions. The NIU, WSU, and at one point, SIU programs followed this model and successfully reloaded. It just seems there is not a clearly successful guy out there with enough past performance as head coach. Some have name recognition, but Gicoletti (sp?)iIs about it so far (not too keen on him either). I just would hate to role the dice on an unproven assistant hoping he has pedigree. It's nice not to have the decision but be able to sit back and criticize as an alum from my chair I guess

The question we have to ask ourselves is what kind of program are we right now. We are a program with a rich history that is among the top 20 in
wins. We have a brand new state of the art practice facility, one of the nicer facilties to play in and a loyal and passonite fan base. We play in a conference that had 4 NCAA bids 5 years ago but have only had 1 the last few years. This would tell me if I'm a possible candidate that the chance to be successful is pretty good. The next question to ask would be what type of coach does Bradley need. Do you go with someone who was a head coach and is looking to get back in it? Do you go with a hot shot assistant who might only use BU as a stepping stone? Do you go with a current head coach at a lower Division 1 level? Hopefully the answer is the right one because if it's not we'll have 10 more years of not competing for a Valley champioship and no NCAA bids.
