  • Wayne McClain on the Peoria Pipeline

    Some very interesting comments...

--on Illinois facing UNLV and prior Illinois coach Lon Kruger:
"As much as people think it's random, I know those guys (on the selection committee)
have an idea what they're doing," McClain said. "I don't think there's anybody that knows basketball
that can say that's probably a coincidence."

--Rob Judson was responsible for the Manual kids going to Illinois in the 1990's..
"I didn't really do a lot of dealings with Kruger (during the recruitment). I knew of him.
But the guy I did most of my talking with was (then-UI assistant) Rob Judson," McClain said.
"We had a relationship in Peoria at the time. He was an assistant at Bradley, and we got to know each other.
We actually played basketball together, jogged together in the mornings, racquetball.
So we developed a really good relationship.

"And he came over (from Bradley to be on staff at Illinois) with Lon Kruger.
So that really cemented the whole situation with me. I'll be honest with you, if Rob Judson wasn't here,
I don't even know if our kids would have come to Illinois. And I'm being honest about that.
He made it so comfortable for us. I liked the school, then I had somebody I could trust. That was important."

--On McClain's relationship with Bill Self who left McClain behind and went to Kansas..
"Self went 78-24 with six NCAA tournament wins at Illinois before taking the Kansas job after the 2002-03 season.
"We are very amicable now. I don't begrudge him at all," McClain said. "I try to keep everything professional."

    ..."amicable now"???? .."don't begrudge him"???

That means at some point they were not amicable. Time heals.

old thread, I know.....but........since DJ Richardson is done at U of I & AJ Riley is going juco, and since in the past several years there really haven't been any top recruits out of Peoria -
      then the question is.....

Has the Peoria Pipeline dried up or are there still some young guys we are about to hear about that will "reopen the pipeline"?

I think the pipeline will be reopened when there are kids who are D-1 prospects but not sure I've seen any in the Mid-State whatever or the Mid-Illini last year. Think it will be barren for a few years.

There are a few good young kids in both leagues just don't think they are Mid majors let alone U of I talent. Probabley the closest Mid major around is the Sorenson kid at Dunlap but don't think he is even BU ready IMO.He is a good shooter for his size but not real fond of contact, needs to get in the weight room than maybe could play at our level. Just not alot of talent like the old Ricwoods,Manual and Central teams of the past but you never know when kids turn that corner and they make an AAU name for themselves.

              recruit

I think Peoria ND has a junior to be this coming year who has some decent size and length.
Peter Hanley 6'6" to 6'7" could be a late bloomer!! Played well in the guts of the conference season..

Agree he is a nice player but he has a way to go to be an Illini or even a mid major. Who knows he may be a late bloomer. Good luck to him.

I like Peter Hanley but seriously - Max Bielfeldt is 1-2 inches taller & put up 25 pts and 19 rebounds every night and still can't break in at D-I - and you think Peter Hanley can play D-I - his production isn't even close to half what Max did.
I recall the same was said about Dylan Sparkman & Shang Ping...

Toyota is a whole lot prouder of him than you and I . He is nowhere close to Max at the same stage of their careers.

after seeing what people say and even talking to a few others who know the local scene...
it's pretty apparent that we have no obvious D-I player coming up who is older than junior high right now here in Peoria.
There's supposed to be a couple junior high kids with the potential but that's so far off it's hard to know...

                        Bloomer

I think he has potential to be a late bloomer not a D1 prospect at this time.. He has 2 tools to work with length and mobility.. It is all about his work ethic and heart.. I was never comparing him to Max and his stats at this point in their careers. I was just bringing up the name of a local kid with some talent and potential..

per scout.com..not one of the Top 40 2014 kids in Illinois is from anywhere near Peoria
                          and likewise in 2015, and 2016 -

per Rivals and every other service that ranks the Illinois kids - I find the same except that Rivals lists this kid at #41 in 2014 - LINK

However - this is a mistake that he is ranked by Rivals as an Illinois kid because he's NOT from Washington, IL, but from Washington, MO (little bro of Scott Suggs)

Thus, sadly for Central Illinois prep fans - the Illinois pipeline is dry for a few years - no D-I caliber recruits even on the distant horizon - I hope we are surprised and that some kid will blow up........but I don't know who it'll be...

One service does have Alex Sorenson at # 36 in 2014

The Chicago Sun Times today has declared the Peoria Pipeline closed...

"Now, with Peoria basketball in a tailspin when it comes to high-level, individual
talent, you wonder just where our next downstate power will come from and
                              when it will be."
