I don't know the workings of the BU search at this time..nobody does......but yes -- I am aware of times a consulting firm or committee is hired or employed just to "CYA"...so to speak -- just so if the choice totally flops, then the blame can be deflected........
I have personally sat on committees that spent endless time dealing with consulting firms only to make the selection that we all know was the CEO's choice right from the start ............exposing that the whole committee and consulting thing was a sham to make others feel like the process was an agreement of sorts between experts when it was not that at all......even though some on the committee knew they were benig used as puppets right from the start
I can still recall how totally blind and clueless some of the people on those committees were, actually thinking their input was relevant or valuable!!
But they didn't know until after the fact that all their time, effort, and expertise was completely wasted since the CEO never cared from the start what they thought....
