  • Followup: Kevin Bontemps

Bradley almost landed Kevin Bontemps, but we got Eddie Mathews from Brimfield and Kevin went to U of I...

Kevin's dad is a Gold Medal winner in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics in basketball....

The "error" if you can find it in this article is this...
"Kevin is the son of Ron Bontemps, also a 6-2 guard who played for the first undefeated high school state champion, 45-0 Taylorville in 1944.
Ron Bontemps played at Illinois and was a starter on the 1952-54 AAU national championship teams for the Peoria Cats .."

while technically true.....it leaves out the important part......
...and to all of us basketball purists....this NEEDS to be corrected to give credit where it is due...

Ron Bontemps came back from the war and wanted to play at Illinois, but the head coach there had the group called "The Whiz Kids" and Bontemps wanted to play not sit the bench -- so he transferred and starred at tiny Beloit College which became a national basketball power when he was there in the late 40's & early 50's

Panther fan here, didn't like the Morton teams of 78-79. They were too good. We lost in the sectional to them twice in a row, I believe. Those were the first games I ever saw in the Fieldhouse.

Former Lion here...we took care of em in the sectional...Literally had Kevin in tears on the court toward the end of the game when he knew he was coming out....then we lost to E. Moline in the Supersectional...

Good stuff.. I was at MHS at the same time,, always thought we were intimidated by the Lions- heck any of the Peoria schools..

Kevin was like Matt Roth- great high school player who went to a bigger school and didn't shine maybe as brightly as he could have at a smaller school...

        Those were good Morton teams...

Bugaieski, Waibel, Gregg Garrison... good bench as well...

???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

I remember that Morton-Central game. Didn't a couple of kids from Central get arrested just before the game and then were allowed to play any way, leading the Lions to the win? It was a long time ago so I'm a bit fuzzy on this but seem to recall that being the case. Anyone recall the details?

Kelvin and Kevin Jordan were on that Central team. They might be the ones you are thinking of.

Would have been a late 70's game, if that was the case, coached by the Great Bruce Boyle...

I believe the Jordan twins were in fact arrested during one of the seasons...

1979 was Bruce Boyle's last year as head coach- they finished 24-6....Tony Gower was the guy who made that team go... John Venturi, by the way, was an assistant on the 77 team that won state....

You are correct...the "twins", Kevin and Kelvin Jordan, were arrested for burglary about two weeks before that game. Coach Boyle kicked them both off the team after hearing about what happened. They didn't play for a game or two and then they were reinstated by the Principal (Corky Robertson) because "they were innocent until proven guilty". Boyle said that it was his team and he could kick them off if he wanted to but he ultimately lost that battle. (This was the main reason that he resigned after the season ended.) The twins got to play and we handled Morton pretty easily that night.

That's right...I was only nine years old but thought I remembered it right. I remember thinking that the game would've been completely different if those Jordan kids didn't play. Final score was 75-64, Central, if I recall. Funny I can't remember where I put my wallet most days but I can remember that.
