Lusk is the coach that I want! We need a statement hire that will send a message throughout the MVC and beyond! The Lusk hire will do that!
Im not opposed to lusk either...

but why is he a "statement" hire

any more than Johnson, Muller, or Amaker. I think they are all statement hires actually.

I totally agree, I pass on Amaker and Johnson plus any of those other candidates not from the mid-west, Lusk has been my number 1 choice from the start.

Big-10 and Purdue roots plus the ability to recruit regionally.

IMO, Lusk is a statement hire for BU because of his recruiting contacts and presence in the midwest and the fact that he has been noted as one of the top Assistant Coaches in the Country. I think that Lusk is ready to be a head coach and do well at this level. There is one signed recruit whom I would love to see at BU, and if we get Lusk for a coach, I think that we have a chance at keeping that recruit here. IMO, if I were an AD and had to put my reputation on this hire, I would only consider one of the three names that you mentioned for my short list for an interview and that person would be Amaker. I would also give strong consideration to Gard and Terry.

I also agree I see little to impress me...i have nothing whatsoever against Dane Fife other than what I can plainly see in his track record...
I know he started at a really low level at IPFW -- but......

Seriously --- this is what his bio starts with...
"Dane Fife has led IPFW to double-digit wins in each of his first five seasons."
Page Not Found (404): It looks like you're lost... The page you are looking for no longer exists.

Ahem...say what?? This is a bragging point ?? -- that his teams have actually won more than NINE games in each of his seasons??

Here are his win totals...10, 12, 13, 13, 16, 18, and only ONE winning season at 16-15 before this year.
PLUS -- look at the track record of his teams, they score frequently in the 40's -- often in the 50's!!!
In his 6 years at IPFW, he has a dozen games of 40's or less on his team's offense, and more than 40 games in the 50's!!!!!
They launch oodles of 3-pointers -- almost 200 more 3-pt attempts than their opponents, and so if they aren't falling they get hammered -- often losing games by 20 pts or more to the South Dakota State's, North Dakota State's, and IUPUI's...

Heck -- Illinois State, in a season that helped get Porter Moser fired with only NINE wins, even held them to just 36 points a few years ago...

Also Dane Fife would have no loyalty whatsoever to Central IL or Bradley --
I don't deny he might still succeed and do well, but the instant he was good enough to get a call to go elsewhere - he'd be gone...

I could not get excited about Dane Fife. 4th and 5th place in the Summit League doesn't seem to translate well into MVC success.

if we go for anyone in the Summit, go for the Oakland head coach, Greg Kampe...
he consistently gets good players and wins...

                  People assess college coaches incorrectly.

People look at wins/losses, conference titles, awards, etc...

Really what you should be looking at is where the coach has brought his program relative to where they "should" be.

For example, lets assume the default position for Kentucky in the SEC is #1 and South Carolina is #8. Next year, if South Carolina finishes 3rd, makes an NCAA tournament, and wins a game; doesn't that mean Horn did a better job the Calipari if he finishes 2nd and happens to make a Sweet 16?

People just look at the Sweet 16 and ignore how far it took to get there. A Sweet 16, at UK, is basically a punt.

Bringing that back to someone like Fife. Maybe (it probably is) IPFW "should" be right at the bottom of their conference (they have no facilities, support, fans, and compete in a state of high performing teams). If he finishes 5th, that is saying something.

It is the same sort of thing that is said when Bo Ryan takes a perpetual bottom dweller in Wisconsin and makes them into an perennial tournament team.

Scheinder at Kansas State football is probably the best example. KSU has absolutely no business being a +football program and for a decade thats exactly what HE made them. The distance to a Big 12 title is significantly different for KSU relative to a Oklahoma or Nebraska.

That's reasonable, Indy BB. I'm not saying I'm right, just that I'd be less excited, from a fan's perspective, than I would about other names we've been connected to.

I think where we "should" be might be one of the core disagreements on this board.

                              You know what I mean...

BU probably wants to stay within the 35-42 age group.
