  • Family environment....

I have heard BU players in the past say that JL created a "family environment" around the basketball program for his guys. One of the criteria mentioned by Cello in an interview after JL's firing was that he hopes the new coach will understand that guys like he & Tony Bennett came from urban backgrounds and will make the b-ball team a family environment for the players like JL has done.

With that in mind in conjunction with the latest on SM, it would seem that the allegiance on the BU team was to JL as much as it was to BU. It makes sense considering BU has always had a solid basketball history, but really could not be called a priority b-ball destination like some other Universities with similar histories.

I was thinkng that should this hiring process bog down or if they hire the wrong type of coach for the job that there could be a mass exodus this summer. You wonder if JG & Dr. C took any of this into consideration when they decided not to give JL at least one more year.

No one but them knows what they thought about....but, I would think they thought about every single angle, aspect, or part of the program.

From a basketball standpoint, I did feel that JL's time at BU had run it's course, but sitting here today, I'm afraid that this coaching change could be a bigger setback than any of us might had anticipated. Guess you gotta break some eggs to make an omelet though...

I don't think we can assume there will be any great setback unless we know who the coach will be.

In the long run, this probably had to happen. Now, without a shade of doubt, the pressure is on the administration to make a great hire.

How can you possibly say that with no idea at all who the next coach will be, what players will stay, what players the new coach might bring with him. I could have lived with another year for JL, but 9 seasons and no top 3 finish and a conference record under .500 I can't disagree with the decision. While I would consider JL a good coach he was in no way elite at this point in his career.

Shouldn't have singled you out, just a general comment towards the numerous people with the "BU basketball will be irrelevant for the next 10 years" mentallity.

I think you missed my point or I didn't clarify it well enough. I've always thought JL could recruit decent talent & that the product on the floor was generally as good as the asst coaches he had at the time. I also felt that JL may have worn out his welcome with the regular MVC refs as it seemed to me over the last 3-4 years Carver has been less and less of a "home court" advantage.

What I was trying to point toward was in my perfect world the new coach would be able to utilize his coaching skills with JL's talent for the first few years (ala Weber at Illinois). To jumpstart his regime as the coach. I'm getting the sense that the cohesiveness of this group and JL is going to result in that talent pool not being quite as abundant as it would be with JL back next year. Let's hope the new coach can come in and hit the ground running, whoever he is.

Big thanks to two guys who helped define Bradley Basketball as a family during their eras. Two guys who epitomized hard work, dedication...

Agreed - I wish nothing but the best for both of them.

Agree. Now let's get Duggar Baucom in here.

You've made your argument for him, but I don't think anybody is buying what you're selling on the VMI coach. Thanks, but no thanks.

While I'm not against Sammy's decision (or apparent decision) to leave BU, I wouldn't consider him bleeding Bradley red, as his BU blood will turn orange & blue in an instant. Bleeding a team's color doesn't just last a few years...it's for a lifetime.

We'd probably be just as well off if Jim Bob Duggar (from 19 kids & counting) took over. Not really, but this just ain't gonna' happen...for either of those Duggars.

I agree. Leaving doesn't change what he did at BU, but he won't be viewed the same way. Oh well. I don't think it bothers him too much.
