  • A Candidate Worth Considering

    Duggar Baucom, VMI.

In six years at VMI, he has turned the program from perhaps the worst in America to one that is very respectable, and as exciting to watch as anyone in the country. Five years in a row they've led the NCAA in scoring, an NCAA first. Reggie Williams, now the sixth man for the Golden State Warriors, led the nation in scoring two years in a row. He also had a guy lead the nation in steals per game.

Baucom had 18 wins this season with a team full of underclass kids and 24 wins two years ago - the 2nd best season in VMI history. They won on the road at Kentucky. The team has been to the conference title game twice in the past four seasons and finished fourth this season, closing the year by winning six straight until their loss in the conference tourney semis. Before he arrived on campus, they hadn't won 14 games in a season in NINE years!

Baucom has accomplished this at what had traditionally been the single TOUGHEST PLACE TO RECRUIT IN AMERICA. Period. 1,400 students. A full-time military life with very limited off-campus privileges. Only about 8 percent of students are women. Lights out at 10 or 11 pm every night. Classes on Saturday. And no breaks for athletes.

With his style of play, he's even started to attract some stud recruits to VMI with two being on the All-Freshman team this year, including one kid who was Freshman of the Year. They're likely to be favored to win the Big South in 2011-12.

Let's look at the criteria Michael Cross laid out.

    1. The educational experience of the athletes. ALL VMI PLAYERS GRADUATE. PERIOD. EVERY ONE OF THEM.

    2. Living within your budget and being part of the process to enhance those resources. THERE IS VERY LITTLE BUDGET AT VMI.

    3. Team environment, which includes off-court behavior, transfers in and out. More specifically, Cross said, ???Is there constant angst every other day, are you constantly dealing with crises, or is there a stable, values-based culture that everyone is comfortable with and Bradley would expect???? VMI DOESN'T ALLOW TRANSFERS AND, UNDER BAUCOM, THEY'VE HAD FAR LESS FOLKS LEAVE THE PROGRAM THAN EVER BEFORE. KIDS WHO LEAVE GO BECAUSE THEY CAN'T HACK THE MILITARY LIFE. HE IS ADORED BY HIS PLAYERS.

    4. Compliance with NCAA, conference and university rules, and with federal, state and local laws. NO ISSUES WITH NCAA WHATSOEVER.

    5. "The extent to which you??™re competing for championships,??? Cross said. TWO CONFERENCE TITLE GAMES IN FOUR YEARS, A SECOND PLACE LEAGUE FINISH TWO YEARS AGO, ALL AT A PLACE WHERE FINISHING .500 IS A HERCULEAN ACCOMPLISHMENT.

How do I know so much about this guy? My dad is a VMI grad so I follow the Keydets almost as closely as I follow BU. He'd put fannies in the seats and, with the caliber of athletes he'd be able to recruit at BU, it'd be 40 minutes of hell every night for the opposition.

Page Not Found (404): It looks like you're lost... The page you are looking for no longer exists.

Might as well hire Platt. I don't think he'd be a good fit. He has no Midwestern ties for recruiting and has only had marginal success. Granted, his high scoring offensive system would be fun to watch...... but the losing would get old real quick..... think Stan Albeck.

if you can win 18 at VMI, you can win 20+ at Bradley. He isn't able to recruit nearly the athletes he could if he were at BU

Just the facts...and you decide...the "18 wins" is not what the NCAA sees, since FOUR of them were vs. non-D-I's!! (Randolph, UVA-Wise, Southern Va, & Central Penn College!!!!!!!!!!!)

Here is their NCAA D-I resume the past two seasons....

              VMI
              2010-2011: 14-13, RPI=202, SOS=262, 12 of their 14 wins are over teams with >> 200 RPI, BEST win was UNC-Ashville (RPI 146)

2009-2010: 6-19, RPI=310, SOS=248, ALL of their wins are over teams with >>247 RPI, best win was over Jim Platt's Army (RPI 247)

              and so it goes...

                I disagree.

if you saw the talent he had at his disposal, you'd agree. Having watched both teams numerous times in 2010-11, I feel confident that VMI would've whipped BU this year.

I've seen VMI several times. They run an gimmick offense that, IMO, would have a hard time succeeding against MVC opponents.

I understand that VMI has a limited reach for player talent and is forced to be creative to try to win, but I just don't see how that style is sustainable at this level.

As for whipping BU this year, I don't think I agree with that either. They may have been able to win, but a .500 team with losses to Presbyterian and Morgan State isn't whipping BU.

I don't think we're being honest with ourselves if we believe the MVC is that much better than the Big South right now. Sad but true.

You're joking, right? Or at least maybe a slight exaggeration?
Check the athletic budgets of the Big South schools, and the arenas and the attendances they draw. Also check the coaching salaries. You won't find any $450k- $1 million dollar coaching salaries in the Big South.

The MVC is the 12th ranked conference in RPI, the lowest it has been in a decade. The Big South is ranked 22nd, behind some pretty bad conferences, and it hasn't ever been much better than that. Most of the teams in the Big South are perennially below 200 in RPI, while most years the MVC doesn't have any sub-200 RPIs. There is a huge gap between the 2 conferences, and I am cwertain any coach in the Big South would jump at the chance to coach Bradley or any MVC team.
Chances are that among the hundreds of interested coaches inquiring about the Bradley opening are most if not all 10 Big South coaches.

agreed but i'm going solely by one thing: having watched both conferences play multiple games this year....most years MVC is well ahead of Big South. This year, it isn't.

The Big South is still the Big South, folks. Let's not get carried away. The MVC is bad but not Bottom-10-conferences-bad.

                            Perspective, folks.
