Controversy in Big East Tournament

In todays 2nd round game between St. Johns and Rutgers, at the end of the game the officials essentially stopped officiating the game.

Down 2 with 4.9 seconds left, Rutgers had the ball after a made free throw. They threw the ball to half court, where it seemed the player who initially touched the ball was fouled. Then the St. Johns player takes the ball, travels, AND steps out of bounds at about mid court with about 2 seconds left that would have given Rutgers the ball for a chance at one more shot. Also, before all of this transpired, Rutgers was fouled twice leading up to the end of the game.

Interesting end to the game. If I were Rutgers I would be LIVID

Rutgers has every right to be mad, but I don't think they would have made a basket at the end anyway.

What???? Of course the odds would be long, but the CHANCE to make it should have been there. Potential outcome is meaningless. Officials need to officiate until the final buzzer goes off.

I agree, and I said they should be mad. So there is no confusion I state, they should have gotten the ball and had a shot.

Separate to the issue of right or wrong is my prediction that they still would have lost.

Ha. First things first, that was an over the back foul on the inbounds. That's one.

Then the guy traveled. That's two.

Then the guy went out of bounds. That's three. (although obviously if #2 is called correctly, #3 is irrelevant)

Throwing the ball up in the air is a bit more dicey; players at end of games often do that so that time runs out while the ball is up there. But that ball was heading for the stands. Should be a T. That's four.

clearly the refs were derelict at the end of that game-- they have an obligation to review since the ball clearly went out of bounds with 1.7 seconds left!

They also have the obligation to stay on the court until time expires, but they did NOT -- they were leaving the court with time remaining and thus there was no ref to blow the whistle on the guy's traveling and stepping out of bounds!

Jim Burr, Tim Higgins, Carl Walton -- they need to give their paychecks back and be suspended.

Believe me, this was no mistake! Someone got paid off, at least IMO.

This makes me sick! And you wonder why people have tuned out sports, the BCS teams in particular, who by the way treat the lesser BCS teams the same way they do mid-majors.

If this John Adams has even a shred of credibility, he will fire these officials immediately! Even if nothing fishy happened, just walking off without even looking at the replay wreaks of laziness at the very least!

Might be a little harsh. These guys seemed to have a good reputation and just screwed up..... BIG TIME. Even the coaches and players seemed fooled about the ending as there was no immediate protest and everyone went to shake hands.

What are these bad officials doing in a conference like the Big East? They should be here in the Missouri Valley.
