Recruits and LOIs

No intentions of this turning into a speculation festival on our incoming recruits, but rather a question -- how solid is an LOI? With a coaching change is it a given that a signed recruit can leave? That's always te assumption I was under, but wasn't sure. Bad Internet out here on my trip, so I thought this would be easier than scouring a bunch of other webpages. They don't like to gee out free wifi much out here!


Here's to hoping our currency recruiting class stays as they all sound like they would have an excellent future (on and off the court) at BU.

I think we should require them to meet the new coach, but if they still want to go somehere else let them go. They made a decision based on a different situation. I would rather they stay, but even if they go it just gives a new coach more openings for players he recruits. Again I think it would be better if they still came though.

The recruit is still bound to the LOI but can be let out by administration when a coaching change occurs without penalty

I think they have to be released from loi, but it seems customary to do so.

LOIs are solid, unless the school grants a full release.

Typically, schools with coaching changes have a process in place where the recruits and returning players meet with the new coach and take it from there.

A player who has signed a LOI cannot simply walk away on their own.

Thats better than I expected. I also hope out admin makes them wait and meet the new coach..

Of course the scummy coaches out there are eying a few of ours I'm sure...

I'd love to have him, but that would really reflect poorly on the program. Future recruits would not consider us if they had any connection to him.

Exactly. I'm not sure how we go from not letting the door hit them on the way out to basically forcing them to stay.

I say let each kid and his family make their own decision.

Many understand the point here. You do no have to release a LOI, but if you do not, then the recruit can still transfer the next year, and it will burn every recruiting bridge we still have (though most are gone already), and prevent you from building new ones in the future.

And then we'll never get another highly rated recruit...


You don't want the players that are here if they want to leave, but you want to force the recruits to come here?? Color me confused.

IMO the right thing to do is to hire a new coach let them work to sell the University/program to the recruits and then allow the recruit to make up their own mind.

This may not seem like the best answer in the short term but it is the right thing to do. The situation has changed and we should make it clear we really want them but we respect their right to make a different decision.

Doing the right thing when it is convenient is easy. Doing the right thing when it is inconvenient demonstrates character. We expect our recruits to do the right thing once they are here and they should get the same treatment when they are making their decision.

This is the best option, talk to the players now and the incoming recruits and ask them to at least meet with the new coach and listen to what he has to tell them before making any rash decisions, if they want out I believe you need to let them go.

Pretty sure that is what will transpire...get the new coach....meet with players and recruits...sell himself and BU again..let the chips fall...
