Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final
???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

Hinson is the other name that, to me at least, comes without a significant concern. Gard and lusk may be great but hard for me to tell since they've only been assistants. Cooley and Johnston sound like good coaches but have no ties to the midwest and so could struggle with recruiting... Giacoletti had only been exceptionally good when he inherited bogut from majerus. So I'm a little worried about his history as a head coach. Howard is an interesting option discussed at length here already... He's a high risk guy with potentially high reward. The rest of those guys don't do a whole lot for me.
at ND State -- he had 9 losses the first year then went down from there..never having that degree of success again
At Eastern Washington he had 11 losses the first year then went down from there..never having that degree of success again
At Utah -- same, inherited lottery pick Bogut, had great season in 04-05, then really tanked to 14-15 then 11-19 and was canned. Jim Boylen took Giacoletti's team over and went 18-15 then 24-10.
If the hiring of Dr. Cross, Elvis, Jeff Neubauer, and recent VB hire Maurer are indications, then a good bet would be looking east for candidates ..
the head coaches at Princeton & EKU have to be on anyone's short list...

Possible Candidates
t--- There are Coaches and Asst. Coaches out there who may have an interest in the BU job but who do not want their current school to know they may be "looking". They want their interest kept quiet until more details on the job are available and after they know they are being seriously considered.
Also, there may be potential candidates who may not have given much thought about making a change but might do so after being contacted by a search firm regarding the BU job.
And finally, a good search firm can do a thourough and comprehensive investigation of potential candidates to uncover background info that might not ever be available to an AD.
Those of us in business use search firms all the time to locate viable upper management candidates. Why shouldn't a school do the same?
Use of a search firm by BU is a very good thing, IMO.

also... doesn't Michigan State have a highly regarded assistant? If so, I would include that person.
edit: make that 4... I just saw Paul Lusk on the list.

We can speculate all we want -- but here's a statement by Dr. Cross on the timing and openness of the hiring procedure...
""There is no timetable or deadline to hire a new head basketball coach."
A confidential national search ..will begin immediately.
No further statements are anticipated about the search or candidates until the hiring announcement."

I think the first or second list of people is really early in the process.
I wouldnt discount it, but lets see what the list looks like in a week or so.
I dont think people like scott nagy, and jay spoohour are real candidates.
i also think that
the princeton coach and tommy ammaker are real candidates.
I don't think the EKU guy is legit

The list is just wessler's speculation.. Has nothing to do with the confidential search conducted by the search firm.

Larry Brown is on my short list. Last I heard he was looking for a job!
In reality I'd take him for the next 2 years over just about anyone. He would be worth the dollars spent on multiple levels. It's just never going to happen but there needs to be a bit of thinking outside of the box for this hire to make sense to me."Educate and inform the whole mass of the people...they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty."
