  • Reynolds article

I'm really kind of surprised at the timing of this article but it seems a week early to me.

We still have a chance(however slight it may be) to go the NCAA tournament...I know...we have to win 4 in a row and it's very unlikely but it's not impossible.

I know we all have some questions but JL has been pretty tight lipped about everything regarding the team from injuries, asst. coaching changes, scheduling, recruiting, etc.....why would he give any kind of answer to these types of questions about his future?......

So basically we get another article telling us there is nothing to tell us. I though it was already a done deal, according to KW?
Why not try to get a couple more articles/columns out of this non-story?

    And I notice Dave mentions:
    In Les’ favor:
    * (A believed) three years left on his contract.
    * A talented core of returnees and incoming recruits, some of whom might move on if he’s fired.
    * A problem-free season off the court in which he has maintained cohesiveness despite the record.
    * An ability to improve despite the debilitating injuries to key players. The Sweet 16 run of 2006 and the overachieving NIT season that followed, however, have become faded memories to many fans as a string of mediocre finishes has occurred in the past four seasons.

Glad to see the brief mention of the injury factor thrown in there.
And I guess the "fire Jim Les" people would accuse Dave of using "scare tactics"?

and time is definitely running out to do so...as we are already more than 12 days into the prophecy that was to occur in..

For the most part, I think that Reynolds is a decent journalist. However, I believe that this article is a little on the sloppy side. I state this as Reynolds did not go far enough up the ladder with his questions which makes the article incomplete. Had Reynolds asked these questions to JG and Dr Cross, who are both very accessible before the game and during halftime, then the article would have been much better.
        Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

he said fewer then 20......meaning after the season is completely over....I don't have a problem with his opinion.....I understand Dave writing the article but I guess it just seems a week early to me.

Talented core vs dwindling attendance. Sounds eerily similar to Coach Mo's last year. It is unfortunate that it has come to that again.

I thought Jim showed a tremendous amount of leadership in his responses.

No. I blame Dave for looking at something objectively, pointing out the positives and the negatives of a coaching move, trying to get a quote from the coach mentioned in the article and then laying it all out.

In short, he did what good journalists do. Remember, not that many fans read the message boards. Dave writes for the general population, not the message board crowd.

I disagree. What any other writer would do, especially after the coach tells him it is not his decision, would have been to get a quote from the AD. Our AD is readily accessable, and always seems happy to talk to anyone. Did the PJ Star even try to contact him?

There is a lot more going on right now, as the team prepares for the tournament. Why bring this up now? I agree with lefty, there is a clear agenda when the PJ Star keeps posting repetetive articles and columns dwelling endlessly on a topic that there is apprently no evidence to even support (at least none that the PJ Star is willing to share with us).

This is a crucial time for the team, and for recruiting. Articles like this serve no purpose, other than to tell us again that they have nothing new to report about the subject. So it might be concluded that they are trying to keep this non-story in the news to hurt the program.

I am more curious about the fact Reynolds left Warren off his first team all MVC.

I do not see how anyone could watch Warren all year long and determine he is NOT one of the top 5 players in the MVC this season.

He deserves serious consideration for MVP, leaving Warren off his 1st team is just horrible.

                    Antoine Young over Warren, really?

The only thing I'm questioning is the timing. I do not think they are trying to hurt the program....if we win 4 in a row....JL is back(if he wants) and we are off to next season and this whole article was pointless....you wait a week and if we lose later this week then you ask the questions. I wouldn't have a problem with it all then

How do you know Dave didn't try to contact the President or the AD? You are speculating there. Readily available to fans/alums is one thing, readily available to go on record in the media is something quite different.

Regarding the last paragraph--it is not, I repeat, not, the Peoria Journal Star's responsibility to worry about the well being of the Bradley men's basketball program. Why do you continue to think this way?

Why should anyone at the paper care how an article written in the paper affects Bradley's recruiting efforts? That is just silly.

You would think Bradley and Jim Les would win more to help out the Peoria Journal Star write more positive articles. I mean, it seems to some that the PJS is supposed to look out for Bradley. Why isn't that a two-way street?

Each MVC city has four votes (head coach, sports information director, radio play-by-play broadcaster and newspaper beat writer), with the stipulation that those affiliated with a particular team cannot vote for any members of that team.

As I stated with my previous post, I thought that the article was incomplete. All Reynolds had to do was to approach JG and Dr Cross with the same questions. That would not be very tough for a journalist from the PJS to do before the game or during halftime! If they declined to answer, Reynolds could state that they declined to comment in his article. Thus the article would have been more complete. The article in today's paper is very sloppy!

Agreed. I understand that. Of course there is a thing in journalism called a tease Why put all your info in one article---I bet people are waiting to see what the AD/Prez have to say about all this.

Why put all your nuggets in one article? Why not stretch it out? It's taught all the time in journalism school.
