  • Which coaches at other MVC teams will not be back.

Specifically for me I focus on these guys

    Good Moves:
    Martin and Marshall

I think Cuonzo presents a very interesting situation. Its year three. He has a lot of seniors..Does he bolt early for a mid-range upgrade, or does he try to make one more run in the next two or 3 years in Springfield

Marshall...Seems to be a name that comes up a lot everywhere.

    Bad Side:
C-Lo seems to be in the, "Thank god I am owed a lot of money crowd" Rumors abound that he is done. SIU hasn't been a program to be too tolerant of bad performance, and bad apples.

Jank: Im assuming gets next year, but he has underachieved, particularly with Osiris, and had a horrible team this year.

    Wildcard:
Lansing...Would he bolt for anywhere, as that place is unwinnable for any length of time.

I think on a scale of 1 to 10 the hottest seats are....
    SIU at a 9
    Drake at a 6
    Evansville at a 2
I think all other Valley coaches are safe

OK, the topic is changed to
"What coaches at other MVC teams will be gone".
Feel free to discuss on that topic.

I think Marshall will get a "promotion". NC State maybe? St. Joseph's? Rumor has it Martelli is on the way out..... Would this even be a "step up"?

The rest of the Valley coaches will all stay.

I got a text from a friend in Carbondale today saying that Jerry Sloan is rumored to be a part of the program next year in some capacity. He said the AD met with some big money donors and promises to return the program to prominence. He also mentioned Matt Painter's lead assistant as a possible replacement for Lowrey.

I am so happy for Counzo. I had the pleasure of officiating his Sectional in Collinsville his Jr. year. Great HS player on a team that won the state tourney 3 years in a row. If he gets a chance to move up ,he better jump on it. Losing 4 Sr starters might be hard to replace. Not sure what he's bringing in but they better be really good to equal this years team.

Wow! How many more NCAA Tournament appearances does Martelli need to keep his job at St. Joes? He is probably their winningest coach in history there and even he might be run out of town! I know he had a really bad year this year, but still. Amazing!

I think St. Joseph's is in need of some new blood, but Martelli isn't going anywhere this year unless he retires. He also brought in what was regarded by some as the league's best recruiting class. The core of their roster this year is freshmen and sophomores.

He will likely be given a strong voice in finding his replacement as well.

After reaching the NCAA in 2008, he was given an extension through 2016.

Next year, however, if they don't show signs of breaking through, I believe he will be asked to step down. He will likely be replaced by one of his former assistants such as Matt Brady or Mike Rice.

But again, do we fire every coach who goes through a three or four year down period? I think that's stupid! Unless you are a coach who recruits McDonalds all-Americans every year, you are not going to make the NCAA Tournament each year.

Heck, if Lovie Smith was fired last year he wouldn't have had the chance to coach the Bears to the NFC North title or NFC Championship game.

I would be very surprised if Jerry Sloan, who is a legend at Evansville and was at the closing celebration for Roberts Arena yesterday, would be interested in a coaching position at SIU. The reason he gave for walking away from the Utah Jazz job was that he ran out of energy to coach anymore. He had just recently signed an extension to coach Utah through 2011-2012. So I can't see him getting right back into coaching at a much lower salary that he would have had with Utah.

Matt Painter's top assistant is Paul Lusk, a former SIU player (1995 grad).

he sounds like a legitimate possibility if SIU did decide to buy out Chris Lowery's massive contract. However, top assistants in the Big Ten usually make more money than the average starting MVC coach earns, so that could be an issue, especially considering the amount needed to buy out Lowery.

Another Purdue assistant coach is Jack Owens. Owens was also an assistant at SIU under Painter for 1 season and under Lowery for 4 seasons. He would also seem like a possibility, and would probably cost SIU less, but he might not be as ready for a head coaching job as Lusk. Owens is a graduate of Eastern Illinois.

NFC North lol. I say that Jank is in some deep trouble, though.
... At the end, of the storm, there's a golden sky. And the sweet silver song of the lark. Walk on, through the wind, walk on, through the rain, though your dreams be tossed, and blown. Walk on, Walk on with hope in your hearts, and you'll never walk alone!

Given the budget problems in the state of Illinois can they really justify or afford to buyout a coach and (most likely) pay a premium for a new one? I know we've had this discussion about BU and Les (numerous times ad nauseum ) but I think a state school has less flexibility than a private one.

OOPS! Still thinking of the old division alignments. Thanks, and that will be corrected.

well said....using that logic then WIU, NIU, EIU, SEMO, and a few others would be a revolving door and no recruit would want to go there.
