Feb. 23, 2011 NCAA Letter to Chancellor Jimmy Cheek NCAA Notice of Allegations Statement from Chancellor Jimmy Cheek

.. certain schools get virtually an endless delay before ever having to defend themselves...as we just saw at UConn....same here....

but these are some very serious charges mostly including the lying to investigators by Bruce Pearl and his assistants...

also an insitutional "failure to monitor" charge...
"the University is alleged to have failed to monitor the men's basketball
coaching staff's telephone contacts with prospective student-athletes and
their relatives in order to ensure compliance.."

The NCAA notice also says Bruce Pearl even pressured the recruit's dad into lying to the NCAA investgators..
"Pearl failed to protect the integrity of the investigation when he placed a series of phone calls
to John Craft (the father of recruit Aaron Craft).....Pearl was trying to influence J. Craft's statements
    to the NCAA enforcement staff."

Many of the illegal phone calls Pearl made were to a Dunwoody, GA teammate of Taylor Brown's!!!

Sad, but there is absolutely nothing on the horizon that will change the status quo with the NCAA......

Failing an investigation of the NCAA/Member Schools by the IRS, Justice Dept, or, the FBI for some kind of financial/tax fraud, collusion, anti trust...

Since we are ruling out Legislative intervention!

and yet we have those who say the one way to fix it is get rid of the rules...if you can believe that!
some want to allow the recruits and players to get paid...what do you think that would do to the smaller schools' ability to compete??

Honestly, I doubt it would change it much. The smaller schools aren't beating the BCS schools for recruits now anyway. There already is a huge divide.

It would change things a lot, and that is why the NCAA will never allow it.

There would be some schools that could afford to pay players more than others. There would be a bidding war for talent that would make today's system look like childsplay. Even if the NCAA put limits on pay, there would be a lot of schools that could not afford to pay the kids. What happens to them? Remember this also would need to apply to all other sports, football, track, and women's sports (thanks to Title IX).
No player would go to a school that couldn't pay them as much as another school would. Probably some schools would have to drop out of the pay-for-play D1. They are already giving them a scholarship and room/board/expenses worth in some cases $30,000-$50,000 or more per year, and many mid and lower level D1 basketball and football programs do not make money now.

From a purely basketball standpoint it wouldn't change who wins and dominates things on a yearly basis. I understand the grand picture--I was looking at it from a D1 hoops perspective.

Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, Michigan State, etc. would still be winning then, as they do now.

              Here's an update...
Up until now the Tennessee AD has staunchly stood behind and supported Bruce Pearl -- but suddenly he's running for cover and leaving Bruce to fend for himself...
it's sounding more like Tennessee might fire Pearl at season's end...

BUT --here's the question I have -- if the really serious violations of hosting the recruits illegally at Pearls house and giving them improper benefits and freebies
              HAPPENED TWO YEARS AGO....
..and if the NCAA knew about it more than a year ago
....then they confronted Pearl and he lied about it way last summer...

...Then why is the NCAA taking so long to act on such flagrant violations?

Tennessee has not been given any penalties by the NCAA...they have been given endless time to prepare responses and alibis...and rehearse their answers...
and have all the way until after the end of the school year and into the summer before they even have to appear before the
              NCAA's Committee of Infractions.

Does this seem fair given the rapid timetable of mere weeks when they responded to anonymous allegations at Bradley -- swooped in with investigators on campus, found nothing to support those inaccurate allegations yet found something minor and slammed BU with penalties anyway -- all in a matter of only a few weeks!
