Indiana State clinched 3rd place with a win at Northern Iowa last night. But one of Indiana State's star players Carl Richard injured his leg near the end of the game on a meaningless dunk. I have heard reports that it may be a serious injury, but nothing is reported in any of the game reports.
The only mention I can find is in the blog entry from this morning by Sycamore beat writer Todd Golden-
??“ When Richard missed his dunk in the final moments it was one of those ???hear we go again??? ISU moments where defeat is snatched from the jaws of victory. But as sickly a feeling as that was from the ISU perspective, it paled in comparison to watching Richard limp off the floor with no weight being put on his right leg.
Richard didn??™t have a good game, but he??™s been so important to ISU??™s fortunes this season. He??™s tough, he??™s respected by his teammates and he??™s fearless.
The initial report that there??™s no structural damage is good, but a sprained knee is nothing to sneeze at if that??™s what Richard suffered.
One other topic I noticed in the blog-
??“ Speaking of fans, did I read correctly that Illinois State??™s students rushed the floor after the Redbirds??™ 51-50 victory over Bradley in the War Slap Fight on 74?
In case you need to be reminded, the Illinois State-Bradley game decided ninth place in the MVC. I know its a rivalry and all, but ??¦ really? Seriously? Illinois State fans rushed the floor for ninth freaking place?
Someone in Blo-No tell me this was some sort of ironic statement. That the ???Birds are so bad that this was some sort of sarcastic gesture to celebrate Illinois State??™s ineptitude when it avoided last place. I could get behind that. It would be delightfully weird.
But based on everything I??™ve gathered, there was no irony at work here. It was a legitimate court-storming, almost certainly designed to stick it to a rival. Oh burn of burns! The ???Birds beat the Braves for ninth place! The concept of bragging rights has rarely meant so little.
Rivalry or not, it??™s big-time weak sauce to storm the court in that situation. My god, Redbirds??™ fans, act like you??™ve been there before. Illinois State students, I??™m confident you have the honor of the worst court-storming in the history of college basketball. Congrats.
