  • Doug Elgin's own words about bad scheduling

    "Elgin said Sunday......
???We have allowed our nonconference schedule to become diluted. Our league
strength of schedule today is 26th (of 33 conferences). We have to address that.
We??™re playing too many 325 RPI opponents.???

    wonder who he's talking to.........

Dunno if they'll answer, I could swear they've all flown south for the winter...
... At the end, of the storm, there's a golden sky. And the sweet silver song of the lark. Walk on, through the wind, walk on, through the rain, though your dreams be tossed, and blown. Walk on, Walk on with hope in your hearts, and you'll never walk alone!
I'm behind you 100% Bradley Braves, You'll Never Walk Alone! BEAT STATE!

          This.

Illinois St is the poster child for this problem, but several teams are showing disturbing year-in-and-year-out trends.

            From the Bradley/ISU notes:

"but the Salukis (235) will win potential tiebreakers versus both Bradley and Illinois State based on the non-conference strength of schedule tiebreaker."

That's embarrassing for all three teams in Illinois this year. Bradley & SIU need to get back to the non-conference schedules they've had and hopefully the new ISU AD can change the culture of their scheduling.

              Stats of the day:

Non-conference schedule comparison: MVC and CAA

The MVC has 2 teams of 10 inside the Top 150. The CAA has 7 of 12 inside the Top 150.

The MVC is led by Wichita St at 59. 3 CAA teams are better.

The CAA has 11 of 12 teams inside the Top 225 (e.g., the 2/3rd cutoff point).

              Our 3 main at-large candidates this season have SoSs of 59, 170, 199. The CAA's 3 main at-large candidates have 14, 46, and 136.

Tossing out the 2 outliers of Georgia St and Illinois St (equally bad), there are 3 MVC teams (SIU, Bradley, The Drake) with worse SoSs than every single CAA team.

Scheduling bcs teams is not easy unless you are willing to play these teams on the road , other best opportunity would be to get into a thanksgiving tour. that has several bcs schools in it.

Very much agree that the MVC schools need to get into meaningful Thanksgiving tournaments. IMO, they also need to step up scheduling better mid-major schools with their non-conference schedules. Granted predicting the mid-major part of this can be tricky.
                  Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

Northern Iowa got to play New Mexico and Indiana in a tournament setting.

Wichita St went to freakin' Maui, although they got unlucky with the draw.

Missouri St got a road game at Tennessee for the PNIT.

Bradley got whatever the heck that thing was in Massachusetts.

SIU got Purdue and Wright St in Chicago.

I don't think finding these tournaments are a problem. WINNING them is.

This is one area where I have been pleased with JL.

This year maybe a little iffy but not a big deal.

                      Heres my theory...

go on the road for buy games, then get buy games at home.

The newer coaches in this league have scheduled pathetically.

Its embarrassing really how bad its gotten

Has Elgin ever addressed the topic of some Valley schools making concerted efforts to torpedo the recruiting of other Valley schools?

That's called recruiting in general. Something Doug Elgin has no control over. Negative recruiting is a part of it. You know that.

Not all coaches partake of negative recruiting. Ask any coach and he'll know who does and who doesn't.

And I'm guessing when asking that coach they won't mention themselves as a negative recruiter will they?

Coaches are pretty careful about calling out other coaches on things like cheating, negative recruiting. At least the smart ones are.
