  • Dave Reynolds 2/20/11- Re: Bracket Buster

Valley gets "punch in the nose"

Doug Elgin seems to still think the "benefits outweigh the negatives" with the BB. But I wonder if he said that with a straight face?
He also stressed that the teams in the MVC need to strengthen their schedules.

    One notable mistake. Dave says-
This year, add to the gripes the MVC’s first losing record in the series: a 3-7 mark in which the only wins came from the bottom four teams — Drake, Bradley and Southern Illinois. Drake won at home over Detroit 84-76, BU rallied to win at Tennessee-Martin 81-75 and SIU defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay at Carbondale 71-60.

Actually, SIU barely beat Wisconsin-GB 61-60.

edit: looks like it has been corrected!

I think the thing needs junked....

But its more a timing issue than anything for me....

I just dont like giving up a prime saturday for a non-con this late.

If the league is going to screw around and punt the entire weekend like they just did, there's no use leaving BB behind because the MVC actually needs it again. The MVC doesn't need it when they're the #7 conference.

I like it if only because we get to see some interesting matchups that wouldn't ordinarily happen. I really couldn't care less about the impact they have on the tournament (yes, I know that's the point). I'm enough of a geek that Northern Iowa/George Mason was fun to watch. It certainly provides a fun break from seeing the same teams over and over in conference play.

If the BB makes money for the MVC and their schools, continue! Nice to see Valley teams on the ESPN...But they better do better than they did this year..

The idea of dumping B'Busters weekends from some people's perspective sounds like an excuse because we played terribly this year.
It has been very good for our conference in the past, and has boosted the league's RPI, while giving more opportunities for exposure on National T.V.
If we aren't good enough to win these match-ups, then we're just not good enough and shouldn't be dancing. If we ARE good enough, then we'll show it on B'Busters weekend for the NCAA commitee to see.
I really like the break from the conference and lets us fans know how we stand vs. teams with similar strength at this point in the season.

Valley teams should be ready for these games even if it comes during the conference season. It's just another chance for them to shine.
It may be true that WSU's loss hurt their chances significantly, but if you ask me, at this point they are NOT an NCAA-type team the way they've been playing, and due to their lackluster scheduling (aside from Maui), it's cost them.

The only thing I don't like about B'Busters is expanding it for more teams, but I think they do a pretty good job as a whole of scheduling competitive match-ups.

The main argument I have heard over the last few years is that people were arguing against the BracketBuster because they felt it didn't match us up with good teams, and that it did nothing to boost at-large chances and resumes. If that is truly the case, then the valley should not have been 3-7 this year. There were some good match-ups for the upper-tier valley teams, and if WSU, MSU, UNI, CU, etc. would have won their games, I am sure people would be thrilled and be in favor of the BB. The simple truth of the matter is... Had the valley been successful this year in the bracketbuster, then its probable that we could have gotten two teams in. Unfortunately, the valley is not a very good conference right now, and we don't deserve a second team, and we don't deserve to be complaining about the BracketBuster, which could have done us some favors if we were a better conference.
This is just the tip of the iceberg...

In theory it's a good thing for most league members.

For us however, it takes a home game away from us every other year. In a given year we could get a Montana or a Butler in without the event. But we're special like that.

On the other hand though, it does provide us a meaningful game depending on how good we are in any given year; Good teams get good opponents. Seems more beneficial than not, especially with the seemingly never-ending scheduling woes we seem to have.

Agreed...it's an enticement. And I've argued that some of those games have dried up for BU the last 10-15 years as BU has been marginalized in the market due to the growth of DI.

They can whine all they want, but all the BB really proved this year is that the MVC is a one bid league, and not only that, there are at least a handful of mids that are better than either Wichita State or Missouri State.
