  • All Newcomer team

I am pretty sure of three of the guys who'll get named to the All Newcomer Team, but let's check on the credentials of the rest of the Valley newcomers...
(only players averaging 5 ppg or more are listed)

Last year's All Newcomer Team had six members...so I am going to stick my neck out and guess the six guys who'll be named this year they are highlighted in red...

-Doug McDermott 29.8 mpg, 14.4 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.0 apg
    -Rayvonte Rice....30.0 mpg, 13.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 1.7 apg
    -Mamadou Seck...28.6 mpg, 10.7 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 1.4 apg
-Greg Echenique...23.0 mpg, 10.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 0.8 apg (hasn't done as much in the 2nd half of the conference season so maybe not, but everyone drooled about him over the off-season..so...
    -Jake Odum.........29.7 mpg, 9.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.0 apg
    -Kenneth Harris....27.2 mpg, 8.3 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 1.4 apg
-John Wilkins.......22.5 mpg, 7.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 0.5 apg (was a lock early, but fading fast in the conference part of the schedule)
-Ben Smith..........17.0 mpg, 7.4 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.3 apg (could be -- he's come on strong in conference games)
-Anthony Cousin..23.8 mpg, 7.1 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 2.0 apg (pg averaging 2 apg, not likely..)
-Walt Lemon .......20.3 mpg, 6.6 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.0 apg (likewise Walt & Pross have come up big in conference games, but last place isn't going to impress anyone)
-Joe Ragland........19.3 mpg, 6.4 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 2.6 apg (plays for one of the leading teams so you never know)
    -Myles Walker......23.3 mpg, 6.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 0.4 apg
    -Jordan Prosser....21.7 mpg, 5.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 0.3 apg

Here are the six guys who were the All Newcomer Team LAST YEAR...none have really blossomed into game-changers
-Gabe Blair, Wichita (hasn't really progressed this year)
-Tony Freeman, SIU (was one and done but still should have never made this list -- DSE was robbed)
-Adam Leonard, MSU (NOY) (his numbers are way, way off this year)
-Jermaine Mallet, MSU (about the same numbers as last year)
-Colt Ryan, Evansville (numbers are almost identical to freshman year, but the Aces actually seem to do better when he does NOT shoot)
-Ryan Wedel, Drake (his numbers are also off this season)

IMO McDermott, Rice, Odum, Seck, and Echenique are the only givens on the All-Newcomer team, and McDermott is the hands-down NOY.

The names on this list give me hope that The Valley will rise once again.

Good list, t. Only thing I can disagree with at all is that Wedel's numbers are off this season. His scoring, rebounding and assist numbers are almost identical to last year, and his overall FG% and 3-pt % are both up. He's also been forced to play out of position most of the season, due to injuries to Drake's only 2 true point guards.

I think this year's newcomers are stronger than last season's. Last season, that list was dominated by transfers (both from JuCo and 4-year schools). This season, there are a lot more top-notch freshmen, which is better for the long-term prospects of the league.
