I didn't even know he was still coaching. I thought he was retired. And you're right about his job. Valpo fans must have a lot more patience and acceptance of mediocrity than Bradleyfans.

UNI gets some credit for hanging with the best team in BB this year but the rest of the entire slate is an unmitigated disaster. All we proved is our bad teams can barely beat the Horizon's bad teams at home, allowing them to be our equal. And Bradley hurt the CRPI just by being paired with a bottom OVC team. Our upper division MVC team lost to an upper division MAC team, the Horizon proved to be our superior, the CAA is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY our superior, we let the OVC go 2-1 against us, and Illinois St is still, well, Illinois St.

He retired for about a year before Scott Drew took the job at Baylor. Then Homer took over the coaching reins again.

Call their mediocrity a product of moving into a tougher conference about five years ago. Plus they finally have the right blend of veterans and no one dominant team in the Horizon League this year.

Oh yes, he does have those 7 previous NCAA appearances on his resume as well, so that helps when it comes to Valpo fans having more patience, but I'm sure there were some that wanted him out too. But the fact that he is so likeable probably reduces the numbers of the "anti-Drew" fans when compared to the "anti-Les" fans around here. Not that Les isn't a likeable guy either. He is, but Drew is about as nice a person and positive a coach as you will ever see!

Just curious TAS. Do you still have WSU, MSU and Illinois in after what has happened the past couple of days? Also curious about Butler, Cleveland St. and Valpo. Is it possible the Horizon League might get three teams in?

There's a better chance of Digger Phelps complimenting a mid major than the Horizon getting 3. But 2 is reasonable. If Valpo can get a clean conference title it's plausible.

Did Illinois win today (just catching up on the results tonight)?

As for the MVC, time to say hi to 1 bid. I'll hold out solid hope for the winner of the MSU/WSU tilt next week, though.

Nope. Illinois loses 61-57. The game was tied at 51 before the Spartans reeled off 8 straight points to put the game away. Illinois scored 6 points in garbage time to make the final closer than it was.

Both teams are now tied at 7-7 in the Big Ten. Both teams have top 50 RPI's and top 20 SOS's. Illinois now drops to 4-6 against the RPI top 50 while MSU improves to 4-8 in that department. And Illinois's overall record drops to 17-10 while MSU improves to a still borderline 15-11. But that was a big win for MSU.

Illinois meanwhile only has to play Ohio St. and Purdue on the road, but at least still has Indiana and Iowa at home. It would be in Illinois's best interest to split one of those road games, but that will be a tall order.

Without studying the other 67 possible teams in the tournament, I would give Illinois no better than an 11 seed right now (and ditto for MSU), which means their margin for error is REALLY thin right now!

Agreed about the MVC only earning one bid, at least for the moment. I still think both WSU and Missouri St. will be in play right up to the end though.

Doug Gottlieb just said on ESPN that people should stop talking about the Valley as a top mid-major league. He said they are not anymore and looked horrible in Bracket Buster. I still think the Valley is a top mid-major league, just not this year. However, the Valley hasn't been "up" in a few years, so something needs to change.

Yeah, like how about Doug Elgin reestablishing the scheduling requirement that worked wonders about five years ago? That would be a good start!
