  • Carmody on the hot seat?

I don't think there is any chance Carmody will be fired this year, but it just shows the win now or get fired mentality among some fans. This is his 11th year at Northwestern, and the team is fading, partly due to an injury to their star player John Shurna, but also due to the different type of physical player that dominates the Big Ten, and which Carmody doesn't recruit enough of. They are 10-1 in their non-conference schedule, but just 4-9 in the Big Ten.

From the article, and from what I have heard through the grapevine the past few years, it doesn't sound like Carmody likes recruiting at all.

I agree no way he gets fired this year.

I dont think Carmody gets fired. NW is a very tough job.

However, it has been 11 years. That's not exactly a "win now or get fired" mentality. 11 years is an eternity in the coaching profession.

I read somewhere that in the last 4 years NW has won more games than Illinois, not sure what that means but it's an interesting statistic.

          Not even close-

          .............Illinois.....Northwestern
          2010-11...16-9..........14-10
          2009-10...21-15........20-14
          2008-09...24-10........17-14
          2007-08...16-19.........8-22
          2006-07...23-12........13-18
          .............100-65........72-78

Even if we just count this year and the last 3 years Illinois record is 77-53, and Northwestern's is 59-60. And if we just look at conference record, the difference is even greater. Northerwestern was 1-17 in 2007-08, and 2-14 in 2006-07, and has not finished with more wins than Illinois since 1998-99, which was the only time in decades.

OK, maybe it was a dream.

If you read that, I think it was probably referring to the football program compared to Illinois and Notre Dame.

Just beating IL is good for at least a 2 year reprieve.

NW attracts a different type of human being:

Money and media have changed the way "fans" relate to NCAA MBB and FB coaches....

Huge salaries for coaches, universities and athletic departments wringing out more bucks from seat prices, concession prices, and seat licenses/matching donations....

This has ratched up the pressure on coaches to win some kind of title/championship NOW.....Media focus on NCAA Tourney, NIT Tourney, Exotic Preseason/Midseason Tourneys the ultimate fan party trips, also put more emphasis on coaches to win Conference Titles, Conference Championships, and be good enough to get to top tourneys.

Back in the 'old' days, coach loyalty, player development, being competitive, local recruiting, media/people skills, graduating players who stayed in the local community were enough to maintain a coaching job through thick and thin.....sigh......
