  • Lifetime Contracts?

On another thread someone mentioned coaches that perhaps should receive lifetime contracts. In other words coach at a school for as long as they like. There are a few coaches out there that deserve to be mentioned, others that deserve the ability to survive a rebuilding process here and there.

I'll start with my 3 and why but there are others.

Coach K - No explanation required
Gary Williams - Took a program at it's lowest and was able to build a winner and the Maryland loyalist would have it no other way.
Tom Izzo - My favorite college coach because no one has been as consistent a winner over the last decade doing it the right way!

      4. Any coach that takes Northwestern to the NCAA.
      5. Any manager that wins a World Series with the Cubs.

It's done sometimes. Here are examples of schools that considered offering their football coach a lifetime contract to try to retain him-

Oregon State athletic director Bob DeCarolis is prepared to offer football coach Mike Riley a lifetime contract to remain at the school, according to a report in the Oregonian.

And Coach K does have essentially a "lifetime contract" at Duke-

There are also may be a few midmajors who are happy with their coach and would want to award them with a "lifetime contract", such as Brad Stevens at Butler and a few others. But usually such long term deals backfire. Just ask any Southern Illinois fan.

Rick Byrd at Belmont has a lifetime contract, I believe. Edit: No he doesn't. He only received a five-year extension.

I would imagine there are other schools that made the move to DI after being DII powers that have lifetime contracts or at least a high level of security. In many of those instances, however, you'll find at least a decade of consistent, high-level success before becoming DI.

However, for an established DI program with tradition, unless the coach is responsible for the tradition, forget it.

Long term deals are very bad business--especially at the midmajor level. If a BCS type school wants your coach bad enough they are going to get him. The longterm deal doesn't really help the school anyway.

All it does is hurt schools that are looking to get rid of their coach but can't do so for the sole purpose of the long contract/buyout. It's certainly an issue at a few MVC schools.

!00% correct, a coach will always get out of his contract by moving up yet when he does a bad job you end up stuck with him or you have to pay him a lot of money to get rid of him after he has done a bad job, better off to stay with short term contracts .

I would say Joe Paterno is living the lifetime contract! Haha, he practically has been the Penn State coach for his entire life, soon he will have grandsons of players he coached on his team! He has already had numerous father/son combinations, its getting to be that time that he could have a grandson playing for him in the near future, if he lasts a couple more years.

This is kind of dumb. Any coach that has an unspoken lifetime contract (coach K) would never accept a lifetime contract. They would get locked into one salary. Over a lifetime, this never counts for inflation and if you are that good of a coach, you have nothing at the end of your agreed term to leverage a better deal with your current school.

Coaches at big time schools, especially football always leverage another school by throwing a name out there or "entertaining" an interview. A lot of Big East schools were pissed when DePaul's president said they were ready to pay top dollar for a new bball coach. All the sudden 2-3 big east coaches got contract extensions to the amount of what DePaul was ready to throw out there.

I actually heard that he donates most of his salary back to the school.

There are 2 obvious ones that you are missing: #1 Pat Summitt. #2 Geno Auriemma (not in any order).

Jo Pa as someone said as well.

I don't think anyone one is talking about a coach inking a "lifetime" contract, rather, coaches who will remain in place for as long as they want to, regardless of their current/future record, due to their previous accomplishments...

Bobby Bowden got close at FSU....

Bill Belichick will coach the Patriots until he decides to bow out.

Jerrry Jones seems to have a lifetime contract as managing partner of the Dallas Cowboys..

I can't see UNC ever firing/terminating Coach Roy Williams until he wants to hang it up or go elsewhere..
