I can't say I know him but Loren did play semi-pro baseball on the same team as a brother of mine -- although that was many years ago...when he lived and worked in Hammond, IN and was sports editor of the Hammond Times

No need anymore to throw an olive branch at the community re not hiring Wayne McClain...

BU is getting +/- 10,000 at games in February! With a 2-12 team no less (pardon the pun). The community must be solidly behind BU and JL!

I realize this will get me labeled as a hater, but isn't Howard's resume at this point much more impressive than Les' resume when he was hired? I'm not advocating Jim going, but I think if he does Howard would be a fine choice for numerous reasons. I could easily seeing him have a similar effect as Martin at MSU when the Good Ship Hinson finally sailed.

Howard has experience as a low-level assistant who has some proven success as a recruiter. He has virtually zero coaching experience.

Coach Les was a stockbroker and had a short stint as a WNBA assistant I believe.

As far as coaching of course he had a "better" resume than Jim Les. Everyone who applied did. But that was nine years ago. Jim Les got the job. He shouldn't apologize for it.

I will support whoever they hire but I feel there will be much better candidates than Jerance Howard (assuming there is a change in leadership of the BU men's basketball program).

Agree 100%. One could argue he has done quite well considering he did it with no prior experience.

Agree on both counts. We shouldn't assume anything.

If someone had no idea who JL was (his history, BU ties, etc) and read this factual statement by 42, I would think they'd find it quite remarkable that BU has done as well has it has in the past 9 years given our head coach's previous employment.

They would also find it remarkable that BU would commit such a risky hiring move. A hire of Jerrance Howard would be perceived as far less risky.

                    Loren Tate's most recent column-

Sounds like he is trying to make excuses for some of Illinois recruiting failures. He discusses negatives about specific players without ever mentioning names. Classy

What a strange way to promote your coach...

Hey at least, until tonight, he is .500 in the league

I wouldn't read too much into it. It could have been something as casual as 'Hey Jerrance, would you be interested if it was open?', and JH said 'maybe'.

If a change is made, I want a top assistant from a proven Coach. Howard would be great for recruiting, but I want Bradley to commit to the program by getting someone better.

He knows stuff about the Illini, absolutely nothing about Bradley.

I would think Howard could, at minimum, keep more Peoria talent in Peoria. That would be a good start.
