Its not just a problem at the Division 1 level. Yesterday I went to a Division 2 mens game and the officials shouldnt have been doing a high school girls JV game. One guy looked like he had a hip replacement and a knee replacement in the same leg and essentially waddled down the court and couldnt keep up with the play.
There are numerous problems that I dont want to get into after having debated it for a couple days on the high school thread OTOB, but something needs to be done, and it needs to be done quickly.

Many young people don't want to go into officiating. i got patched for IHSA ball and worked some summer camps, and the amount of abuse I took from fans and coaches was unreal. I will admit that I didn't get every call right, but I was told I was racist and called some things that were downright mean. I never did an IHSA game .. if that's how people act over a meaningless camp game, I can imagine how they treat you over a game that counts.
Then they wonder why young people don't want to go into officiating.

That's a very good point. I have heard this from others who officiate at the grade school and high school level. It is a thankless job that doesn't pay well, or in some cases doesn't pay at all.
However, officials at the college level get paid fairly well, and there seem to be plenty of people available to do the job. I have actually seen a trend the last few years that the lesser known officials who are probably getting paid the least, seem to be the ones who do the better job without the attitude.
Bo Boroski, the lead official Saturday night, has had a long history with Jim Les and with bad calls affecting the outcome of games.
These are a just a few threads we have had before about bad calls from him-

And one of the other 2 officials was Roland Simmons.
Here are some stats on Simmons-
In total fouls called per game, Simmons ranks 8th nationally among all officials-
The other official Saturday was John Moore, someone who has not done a lot of Bradley games. He is #65 on that list of most fouls called per game, which is still well above average, considering there are thousands of officials in that database.

While the officials at the Evansville game were poor and influenced the game by calling things too close, they were nowhere near as bad as the officials at the ISU game! If Doug Elgin wants the MVC to become a better conference, he needs to have better quality control programs installed to grade the referees.Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final
???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

I'm not against the officials having to go to camps, because they should go every summer but to hire a guy for one or two league games just because he attended their camp is just plain wrong. That is partially why we have some of the people doing our league games.Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

1.) A better league to work (top to bottom)
2.) Not on TV enough (ESPN or major networks CBS)
3.) More money
It will take a combination of all three to improve the quality of officiating in our league. When your a one bid league its hard to get good officiating. Take Baywatch for example,5 to 8 years ago he worked mainly in our league. As he gained experience and became one of the better officials in the country we rarely see him. Now you can see him in the Big -10 or on TV games almost every week. Their goal is to work the final four and you won't get their working a vast majority of your schedule in the Valley. Thats why we should all appreciate when we do get the good ones on our games.
