  • Last night's refs

Can't let the discussion end without a little more on the refs..

What a bunch of guys with an attitude...they thought we all paid to see and hear them....they thought they hadn't earned their pay without blowing the whistle on every possession...
Clearly the worst and most unpleasant group we've had this year...

Half the calls they blew were complete no-calls....and did you see where one of them again threatened to throw one of our fans out for objecting to the calls...

I'm not even saying their calls favored one team or the other, although early on every one of the Evansville shooters got to the line ..

and of course we had the odd mix of carrying-the-ball calls, high screen violations, ticky-tack stuff, DOUBLE-FOULS on plays that should have been no-calls, plays where they completely missed shot clock violations, and an endless number of long time-outs to review the monitor for something they had missed or were searching to call extra things.

I was told that Doug Elgin will be at our game Tuesday -- I hope he's watching this egotism that tries to pass for officiating...

The MVC Refs have been bad for years.

There was even one time where one official tried to bait Les into an argument after a horrible call. He pointed to the floor and glared at Les from across the floor during free throws.

Teams that play well...dont care about the officials.

The team wasn't worried about it because they were dominant.

        Thats what impressed me.

Sometime a ref can dictate a game and not allow a team that should dominate dominate. Reffs for the most part have been horrible in The Valley for a long time. I blame the the Valley officials for not dictating what their expectation are and reacting accordingly. B.TV and the MVC reffs have a lot in common.

I have posted this before and I will again. It was a Sat night game. we have a 5 or 6th place team play #10 at the time. We are not going to get the best. Something we have to live with. Don't know who was on the ISU red game last night but I'll bet not any of the better in the Valley. Have to agree last nights officials were not very good but not a surprise to me. The Valley has some good ones but also some very weak ones. Probably more weak then good. The officials are individual contractors and are going to work where the best games are and where they pay the most money. Fact of life.

Exactly. I'm not sure what was expected of a Bradley/Evansville game on Saturday. At least we weren't playing on Sunday.
???People say, ???Forget last year', but I want our guys to remember that one, because that will not happen again. We will be much better.??? Geno Ford, 9/22/12

I was just glad not to see Sanzere or Pollard.

I thought last night's crew just got suckered way too many times by defensive players sliding in front of the offensive players and then flopping backward onto their butts. I watch a lot of college basketball, and I never see as much of this phony charging stuff as I see every game in the MVC. I have said for years that it is the sign of a weak ref, and it hurts the league in many ways. For one, it turns skilled offensive players into tentative players afraid to attack the basket, and that has a negative effect when MVC teams play in the postseason against players who aren't so tentative.

Last night the bogus charging fouls did not seem to favor either team, but usually it hurts the more skilled, athletic teams, and allows slow and poor defenders to trick the refs into calling charges.

I think I recognized Sanzere as a ref of the Ohio State and Wisconsin game.

                    Yes, he was there.

And the Ohio State fans were not happy with him-

Which is why we switched to so many Tuesday and gosh awful ridiculous stoopid SUNDAY games...for "better" refs.

NOW I hear the league is thinking maybe the more traditional weds/Sat format is better since attendance is suffering so much.

On a side note, how exactly does a Ref get evaluated for his season performance? Everyone has their bad and good Refs but how does the NCAA evaluate a Ref for his end of season performance review or whatever they get?

There is a person at each venue who does an evaluation of each of the three on every game they work. If the assignor is not at our game we have someone who does the evaluation for them. Can not tell you how the NCAA picks them for the big dance.

This may have been covered before, but who hires MVC officials and who assigns them to the various MVC games during the season?

Are assignments done at the start of a season, or, are assignments done week to week, game to game?

Anyone know if there is a fixed stable of officials for all MVC games? Has there been much turnover of the stable of officials used during MVC games ie have bad officials been weeded out and are new ones brought in?

Is there an organized progression of being a good official in Div III, then moving to Div II, then low mid major Div I, mid major Div I, and finally major Div I officiating?

Anyone know how officials are rated?

Is the NCAA itself involved in nationwide hiring, training, developing, rating and placing officials for its different basketball Div's/conferences?
