  • Other Thursday Exhibtion Results - some quite interesting

Here some exhibition result from last night-

Michigan State had to stage a huge rally from 16 points down to barely nip Grand Valley State (D-II) 61-57.

Illinois beat Lewis 83-58 in front of 16,618 fans.
BUT, Lewis' best player was absent, and they had nobody over 6'6" and STILL outrebounded the Illini!!!!
Richard Semrau played, so maybe he won't redshirt?

DePaul, BU's first D-I opponent beat St. Ambrose 89-73.
But St. Ambrose still lead the game at 45-44 in the 2nd half before DePaul's depth prevailed. DePaul scored the game's final 10 points as St. A's tried to foul to no avail, so this was a much closer game than appears.

    Cincinnati beat Northern Kentucky 87-41.
    Cincy led 47-11 at half.
Marcus Sikes started, played 24 min. and had 4 pts, 5 rebs.

And SEC's Vanderbilt barely pulled out a home court win over Northern State 98-94, even though the Northern State team had just barely arrived in Nashville after a 10 hour bus ride.
They are on a week long bus tour playing exhibitions (because they make money for the school) and are staying in hotels only 3 of 7 nights, and sleeping on the bus during long overnite bus trips the rest of the time.

And Maryland barely crept by California of PA College 79-78.

Ohio State won 80-57 over Findlay, not looking like a top ranked team.
Findlay outscored Ohio State in the paint, and outrebounded the Buckeyes 43-33.
    Greg Oden didn't play.

D-I Duquesne lost to Millersville College 81-77.

    And another surprising one,
UConn had to rally at home from a surprising halftime deficit to win over a weak D-II American International College 75-59.

In all BU's win over the very best D-II team in the nation looks a lot better than what the headlines are showing elsewhere.

Eastern Illinois plays Eureka College (D-III) tonight.

    And another surprise,

highly regarded Utah State got handed a defeat on its home court by EA Sports, 67-60.
Utah State got to within one pt once in the 2nd half but the lead was near double digits most of the 2nd half.

Utah State is 127-11 at home in the past 11 seasons!

EA Sports play at CREIGHTON tonight.

And as I look at other exhibition score, several teams played close games, almost as many as had decent winning margins.

Penn State won their exhibition game but their star player, Geary Claxton broke a bone in his right hand when he hit his hand against the rim, and may be out a few weeks.

San Diego State is picked to be the best team in the MOUNTAIN WEST. They have a preseason All American, and yet they won last night 88-80 over an incredibly tiny NAIA local team, Point Loma Nazarene. The game was within a couple baskets most of the way and the 8 point lead was established only in the final minute.

Here are two exhibitions you didn't note.

      Louisville beat Georgetown College 94-92.
This is NOT the Georgetown in DC, this Georgetown is a small NAIA school in Georgetown, Ky. As in this game should have been a monster blowout for Rick Pitino's squad.
Louisville is in many people's Top 25.
Louisville needed all of 25 points and 11 rebounds they got from freshman Derrick Caracter.

      Syracuse crept by Bryant 92-86.
Bryant is a DII and outrebounded the much taller Orangemen.
Wichita State goes to Syracuse in December.

DII California of Pennsylvania threw a scare into another top team out east.

After almost knocking off Gary Williams' Maryland, they hung really tough with #4 ranked PITT, and was within 7 pts inside of the final 10 minutes, and within 10 inside of the final 1:32.
Pitt had a huge height advantage and outshot their opponents 57% to 37% and outrebounded them 35-27.
This game should never have been this close.
Either these DIIs are better than anyone thinks, or it is just too early!

          1) DII's better than everyone thinks? But BCS fans still KNOW any MVC team could NOT compete within a BCS conference. (just check any BCS message board, they will all chime in and let you know )

          2) It is early for these DII's as well.
