  • Strategic error?

We cut the lead to 2 with 48 seconds left I believe, then immediately fouled when they got the ball in bounds. Why would we not play good defense and get the ball back with 15 sec. to play down 2? Even if they score, we had timeouts and could have extended it to another possession with a quick score.

That says just about everything there is to say. A great effort ruined due to poor administration.

The kids are not being given their best opportunity for success.

Coulda played it that way. So let's say we did... then Mo St pulls a 3 out of their arse at the end of the shot-clock. Down 5 with 13 secs... we come down and turn it over or miss a quick shot.

Hmmm... call time out I guess. Down 5 with maybe 10 secs.

Ok, now foul. Even if they miss 2 ft's, we have the ball down 5 with the length of court to go.

Oh yea... that sounds a lot better.

Note to Coach - try this plan next time. Strategically, at least there won't be any error.

Borderline infraction of posting guidelines - but I'll let it slide. You've been warned.

Maybe in retrospect it's easy to make that judgement. But if they do score then the game is over as there is not enough time to come back. The coaching was very good and not the reason BU lost. But I am not surprised the "blame the coach" posts start immediately.

So as you play out my scenario we lost by 5 instead of the actual 8 by fouling early. Not seeing how your post really lends itself to making a counter-argument. And I'm not a coach, but I;m fairly certain the general rule is you play good defense and hope for the best since it's a 1 possession game.

It wasn't retrospect. Everyone at the dining establishment I was at watching the game expressed their anger and puzzlement the instant it happened.

I never said anything about the coaching, it happened so fast that the player could have simply reacted and done it on his own without any direction from the bench. Either way, I think it hurt our chances and wasn't the smart % play.

I thought "Defense is our identity."

MSU was still in the one and one. I can't fault the coaching decision.

I'm not even saying it was a coaching decision. It does however show a lack of situational awareness and an open willingness to not pay heed to detail. And that does reflect on the coach.

I'd be curious to hear from Coach if he wanted the foul there or if a player just did it without thinking through the time/score situation, couldn't tell from his reaction on the bench.

I didn't see the game but I can't think of any reason you would foul immediately with 48 seconds left down by 2. At the very least play defense for 20 seconds or so...maybe you get a turnover but being down 2 there is not a real hurry to put them on the line with 48 seconds left.

I could hear Dickey V saying "you gotta foul here - send them to the line - try to extend the game".

I CAN'T TELL YOU ALL HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE WATCHED TEAMS FROM ALL CONFERENCES WITH ALL KINDS OF COACHES AND ALL CALIBER OF PLAYERS PLAY IT LIKE BRADLEY DID TONIGHT.

Then it should be easy to give us examples where it turned out to be the advantageous thing to do. Tell me the games, and I'll track down the tapes.
