I still use the commercial breaks for a whole lot more important things...
Because the advertisers at least make an attempt to entertain, better than the typical commercial drone of drug and feminine products....

(read some of the reviews...most thought they were bad)

they really ought to just realize that it is NOT the Hip Hop, teenybopper, pop-music crowd that make up the biggest part of the viewers..
I think the largest part of the middle class, middle age and older people who I know make up a huge part of their audience - might prefer some halftime talent more to their liking..
Maybe I am a bit old fashioned, but I think if they just had a halftime show of talent from each of the past 3 or 4 decades (maybe pick a couple from the Eagles, Phil Collins, Taylor Swift, Celine Dion, Springsteen, Beyonce, and hey -- maybe even an oldie like Willie Nelson or Whitney Houston)

I think they can hit a home run with a lineup like that.....
Basically what the NFL needs to do is to take a look at what groups and or people perform better LIVE as opposed to the studio where performers can take advantage of autotone as well as the various computer effects available. I thought that the Black Eyed Peas selection for the halftime show was curious as I have seen video clips of some of their live performances and well.... we all know the result of seeing the Black Eyed Peas live! smh

BTW, a Celine Dion Super Bowl halftime show would make me throw up continuously until the start of the third quarter!

Apart from the unique stylings Christina put on the Anthem, the mistake she made...which is actually a common mistake that just about every time you see Anthem bloopers is the same...is dropping the 2nd line and singing the 4th by mistake and then getting tripped up and freezing when they realize they already sang the line. At least she recovered well and didn't just stop. Still no excuse for screwing it up.

This has been the lineup of the past 7 super bowls:

            this year: Black Eyed peas
            last year: The Who
            2009: Springsteen
            2008: Tom Petty
            2007: Prince/Florida A&M Marching band
            2006: Rolling Stones
            2005: Paul McCartney

so in essence they have done that

She didn't just screw up the words, she made a farce out of the whole anthem with her screeching. Maybe next time they could have one of the students from Bradley who actually show some respect for the song, flag and country with their versions of the National Athem.

I am perhaps more critical of anthem performances (especially by pop stars) than anybody here. Her "stylings" (which I don't care for) were only magnified by the fact she screwed up the words. Compared to other performances I have heard, she was more respectful than some. In fact, the worst one I've heard was one done by Sandy Patty and arranged for Bands of America, which I would add should have been a lot more respectful than they were. And that was a version institutionalized by educators.

Truthfully, I wish the halftime show would just go away. It's usually garbage and overdone at the same time.

That said, political commentary aside, I think the Black Eyed Peas were a risky choice-yet-they actually did a tremendous job of making the performance approachable for all audiences (young, old and indifferent)...the biggest key in Super Bowl entertainment. They did it better than any of the above, and it was also a very fascinating light show to boot.

I will file it under..."guess you had to be there" to enjoy it...the sound was terrible at the begining and really never recovered...

That's actually a very good point mrcoachdude...pop music does not translate to live performance--especially televised production--well. That's for a variety of reasons...studio production is so overdone that they can cosmetically fix just about anything. Live performance is human, and generally can't incorporate a lot of the equipment studio production provides.

On top of all that...tv production and live musical production require very different equipment and technology that in large part renders the halftime entertainment as I called it "garbage."

Well, people watch the commericals because they are usually very funny and creative during the Super Bowl. The problem is that the commericals have become lame over the past two or three years, and as you said tornado, the advertisers have been aiming these commercials to the lowest common denominator, so to speak. But occasionally there is a commercial that reasonates with everyone, even amongst the pile of garbage that people have to sift through.

How freaking hard is it to know what your singing?

Anyway the whole thing from the multipule singers of songs at the begining to some hack singing the anthem to some other hack trying to sing at half time has gotten old and out of hand.

How about just introducing the teams have a good singer sing the right words to the national anthem and then play the game. And no half time show at all or have a great college band play OSU, TX A&M etc.
I agree. Bring in Blackhawks anthem singer Jim Cornelison or Cubs anthem singer Wayne Messmer and let one of them sing the anthem at the Super Bowl. Now THOSE two know how to sing it right, and they both have the voice to do it.

Then ax the constant parade of pop, "flavor of the moment" singers and bring in some college or even high end high school band to play. It would ad even more spirit to an already huge event.

I agree with all but Celine Dion. We want the crowd into the game, not asleep to start the second half!
