  • ISU The last 2 minute redo----Will Egolf

Im not sure if this just and indictment of Will, or an indictment of Eric B. Alvin Merf, Les, or who.

But Will is a 4th year junior, who didn't have the basketball mindset to simply pull the ball out.

I was watching this on dvr, and if the simple obvious basketball play is made, their is no technical, no loss, and we are talking about when the second win would have occurred.

Instead we have had the last two days

    and this brilliance :

"It??™s about time I had an opportunity like that to get us over the hump. It clicked for me.???

I mean the reason you had the opportunity was because of your own poor decision making.

I watched DSE miss two FT's and you could probably say the same if he makes those.

Oh well.....at least JL had WE prepared to make his. It is all on the coach you know.
???People say, ???Forget last year', but I want our guys to remember that one, because that will not happen again. We will be much better.??? Geno Ford, 9/22/12

Will had a clean breakaway and a clear path to the basket. If not for a one in a thousand event where he just dropped the ball, he would have had a slam dunk that would have brought the house down and given the team a huge lift. It's not like it was the final minute of the game. There was still plenty of time for ISU to come back (which they did). I doubt any coach would blame a kid for not going for the easy 2 points in that situation.

I disagree, as an ISU player was beginning to establish position in the pathway to the basket. I think Egolf simply made a bad judgment call in regards to how easy he thought it would be to score. Although I ultimately agree with your larger point of going for the 2 and being aggressive if you're sure you have the easy 2 points.

I was screaming to slow it down...no need for anything quick...whether its a breakaway or not...time to run clock...shot clock was at 30 or so and 1 minute left..up 8...you pull it back out and hand it to a guard...but like someone mentioned..hindsight is always correct

Yeah it was bad judgement on his part because of time left and the fact that 3 deadbirds were in or near the paint. I thought even if he hadn't lost the ball it could have been a charge or a well defended basket. That being said it could have also resulted in an and one, so who knows really. It wasn't terrible judgement, but up 8 with just over a minute left, the clock is your friend unless you're REALLY sure of those 2 points.

Seems to me it was poor judgment, something that JL would've never done as a player. How many times did we say that JL at point guard was like having a coach on the floor?

I wonder if the situation from the other night speaks to the ability of the player to take coaching and apply it on the court.

Don't get me wrong -- Will strikes me as a hardworking, good kid. An excellent representative of the University. But surely he's been taught how to play the ball and his man so he doesn't foul. Yet he's fouled out of 11 games this year.

Likewise, he's also likely been told to pull the ball out and get it to a guard in the type of situation he was in the other night. Some guys just don't respond well to coaching and I wonder if that's the case here. It happens and it often happens at losing programs.

                  Ding Ding Ding....

His basketball IQ, is simply not high enough for being a 4th year senior. No one has commented on him commending himself for "opportunity like that to get us over the hump. "

To me its a selfish statement....we didn't win the game...

Correcting my earlier post -- I believe Will has fouled out of nine games this year, not 11. My bad.

NO way even if he has a clear path (which he didnt, and I could see that from my laptop in Houston) you do not try to "bring the house down" with a dunk in that situation.

Get fouled, run off as much time as possible, get the ball to Warren whatever but do not turn the ball over. Period. It was time to win the game not try to impress the fans.

If ISU could have come back without the play by Egolf then so be it, but by trying to do something not needed it caused a HUGE ripple effect that did allow ISU to come back.

It was a terribly poor decision. But so was the decision made by Warren to give the ball to DD on the next possession instead of holding it and getting fouled. The whole last 1:30 and the OT was a nightmare.

exactly...if WE thought he was open...that's a concern..he wasn't at all since the ball went right to the ISU player...it was not a smart play by WE..even the announcers said that while he was drinving.

We made so many bad decisions in the last few minutes ,it's hard to say which one hurt the most. One thing we should never do is let AW take the ball out of bounds. It should always be DD.When DD gets the ball the opposition will foul DD as soon as he gets the ball and I don't blame them. We need better inbounds plays to get the ball in AW's hands. Putting DD or DSE at the line is not in our best interest.

I started questioning his basketball iq after he continued to commit dumb fouls game after game, no doubt there is some talent .

                              I agree..

And in putting 2 and 2 together

his comments to Coach Les earlier in the season, that Les spoke about at an Easter Seals Luncheon (without mentioning him by name)

tells you that there are issues as well.
