Yes, he can redshirt. Any player can redshirt for 1 year in his college career. Players have 5 years to complete their 4 years of eligibility.
To qualify for a redshirt, the player must not have played in any games. Since AD has not appeared in any games yet, he is still eligible. The decision can be made at any time, including after the season is over. I suspect they are planning for him to take the redshirt.
A medical redshirt is different. Players can redshirt for documented medical reasons, even if they have played in games as long as the number of games does not exceed 30% of the team's games, and he cannot appear in a game after the halfway point of the season.
